Here is my pleco, its about 4" I think. Every time I try and get a ruler close it disappears. I was told it is a L-83 Sailfin but it doesnt really look like any pictures I have seen online. It seems pretty aggressive too, I am not sure why, always has a fully belly and eats pellets which is hilarious. Seems like it is always chasing one of my cichlids though, so it might have to go. I am thinking about putting it in the 10g to put some size on it and see if I still feel like keeping it. Can anyone reconfirm the L-83? It has put on a couple on inches since it was ID'ed. What do these guys like to eat, maybe that the problem...I give it algae tablets and it eats pellets, but maybe thats not enough anymore...anyway, check it out!

i have one of these plecos too...and love him...always out and about..can handle himself with african cichlids..good choice for african set up tank...most plecos are in danger from africans ganging up on them... this one stands up to them... beautiful.

HEARD!! I will get some veggies for him tonight! Thanks for the tip about the peas.

Davo's one of the key plec experts on this forum as he stated fresh veggies are a must...I use zucccini(sp), and frozen peas...I place the peas in a bowl of semi tepid water, pop them out of the skins and drop in the tank..The zukes I stick them with a stainless fork to weigh them down..My plecs are large so I don't even bother cutting it up. Wash , rinse and in the tank it goes...If I place a zuke in the tank before I go to bed by the morning there's just remenants..GL:popcorn:

Check out the dietry sticky at the top of the pleco forum, has loads of suggestions. Cucumber is nutritionally a crap food to use, zuchinni will be far better.

Any squash will work. So don't let those pumpkins go to waste, turn them into pleco food.

JayK1320, your fish is a Pterygoplichthys joselimaianus. Used to be L001/L022. They get real big real quick, I recently moved a 16" for a friend, it's a badass.

What L would this be now? I tried to Google the name, but didn't get much info on it. He doesn't seem to be growing that quick...maybe he will hit a spurt soon though, the last few days it looks like he has gotten bigger.

Yup definately P. joselimaianus, not P. gibbiceps.

Same question to you, best way to do some research on this? Everything I found said used to be L001/L022 with limited information.

How big is yours Liz? Is it aggressive towards your africans? This guy sometimes chases mine around the tank a big. It takes no crap that is for sure. Any pics of yours?

Like cob said, it is L001 or L022 (they are the same fish). It is the same care for a gibbiceps, just they get a bit smaller. Don't know how you couldn't find any info, because up pops fishbase, planetcatfish and plecofanatics, all good sites with plenty of information.... and then wikipedia.

L001/L022 Pterygoplichthys joselimaianus. The L# was designed to identify the pleco, until it was officially identified with a latin name. However, the L# is still a valid common name.
