Silurus Merdionalis thread

@Fallen_Leaves16 Could you ask what Wes labeled this fish as? Really Silurus meridionalis?

I have no clue at present, having looked at most Siluridae briefly, what this could be.

They are labeled as Silurus meridionalis. I believe these are true possibly, maybe they lose whiskers as they age. Not sure just a theory
Might be plausible… the larger fish looks to be “correct” silurus m…. Smaller guy looks similar but different. Odd for sure tho if thats the case and they drop 2 barbels as they grow. Price point is pretty cheap at least lol…

Great...just great...

I only really developed an interest in Goonch in the past couple years, and am continually confused and flummoxed by the trials and tribulations of ID-ing them. Bigger, smaller...round eyes, oval eyes, square eyes...ongoing renaming and reclassifying...

Now I have started looking at Silurus cats, in particular meridionalis...and this is starting to look like the same kind of dog-and-pony show as well.

I miss the bad old days, when every cichlid was a Cichlasoma...and every catfish was either a Cory, a Pleco, or a "mystery cat"...and a "wels" was a single almost-mythical species of exotic and fabled catfish that lived in legend, rather than in aquariums. :)

I checked the seller's fish list. It's pretty nice. It's an actual store in SLC, Utah that also ships nationwide. For giggles, I put together an order of half a dozen cichlids (already large 6-12") and one of this mystery catfish worth total $200. The shipping was quoted by the website at $450. That's a showstopper for me.

No kidding, eh?

That's one of the problems with living in huge countries like the U.S. or Canada; you order a small item from the opposite end of the country...quite literally, in this case...and the shipping costs are horrendous.

Then, you add in the kicker, i.e. the package is fragile, temperature-sensitive, time-sensitive, and you get...well, you get a $450 delivery charge! :)
