Silurus Merdionalis thread

As of 1/31/2023, I really want to move him into a 75 gallon, but I am also treading lightly for 2 reasons 1-the last time I moved my big aimara, he must've been stunned and he was floating belly up less than 2 hours later and 2- I worry that he may not fare well and may die if I rush this new tank, which would absolutely suck because it would be a long while before Rod gets more in. I really wish I knew better and didn't let the group of 3 live in the same tank.

Take ur time on the 75 setup and theres no worry. Let it cycle for a month, run some “tester” fish, then let er rip lol… these guys are pretty hardy also i dont think theres any worry or comparison to aimara. Last time i moved mine he bailed from the acclimation tub while i was up stairs. Found him on the floor floppin, threw him in the tank… that lasted all of about an hr as he terrorized every fish in it so he was netted and placed back alone in a different tank un acclimated. Didnt miss a beat lol… As long as ur 75 is cycled and ready to go, ur guy will b fine. If ur trying to move his current tank into a 75 same day, problems will arise.

Yeah i agree, thank you mate. Still attempting to find another aimara after my big guy passed. its always a risk with our rare fish that we have, that they may be hard to get, but thats also what makes the hobby fun and rewarding but also expensive as can be. I appreciate your help so much, you're one of the best!

Ahh, too kind my man… thank you. I killed 3 highland goonch in 2012 moving them to a bigger tank too quickly back when they were hard to get. We’ve all been there and know that worry well… caused me to automate my entire fish room tho. Havent done a physical water change since lol… always a learning experience but some positives come out of it. These days im overly cautious as well and usually wait at least a month to “cycle” newly setup or cleaned tanks and test with cheap fish just to be sure. Patience is one of the hardest parts of the hobby. Dont rush it and ur guy will b more than fine.

Thank you man! i really wanna automate my gallery, i have my thousand, my 180, 55, and some other tanks im getting, but we'll see haha. Thanks again. I'll give an update later tonight on him!

Finally moved Wels to his temporary setup in my room. It’s an unheated aquarium. Was pretty worried because his old tank was so small, and his tail fin is trying to regrow back. I also have to work on my 1000 gallon and get started on the 180 I have for grow outs. He acclimated for about 20 minutes and settled in nicely and ate about 3 hours later. The only challenge is finding time. I’m extremely busy with school, rowing, keeping up with my tanks, and work. Trying to balance all that with 14 tanks is quite the task. I love it though. I have the sump for the 180 just may have to rebuild stand. I’m going to post pictures later.

Here’s the 180. It has two corner over flows as you can see. It’s a miss fit because the tank stand is for a different tank and this tank was given to me from my coach. I would prefer for the grow outs to not be restricted as they are pretty big, but if I must I’ll leave them in, and not worry about that. I really wanna get him into the 180 or just a temporary 75.

The original plan was to do my monster dream tank out of plywood but with the price of plywood when I was ready was sky high. I settled for a Boswell pool pond.

It is now April 4, 2023 and the wels is doing solid. I believe that I overfed as much left over food and waste. Switched to a stronger HOB. Water is now unheated. Its tank is on the floor in my room. The plan is to move all tanks out to the garage eventually. I am gonna start to feed more naturalistic foods like tilapia fillets and worms occasionally. To prevent infection from the poor water quality of tank for a bit, eye is a bit cloudy on right. Added some simple meds, API general cure, a single dose for him. Will upload pics later.
