Silurus Merdionalis thread

Sorry for bad quality. His tail must’ve been torn up when he was in his old tank. Any input on whether you guys think it’ll grow back. He’s being treated for cloudy eye but also to prevent secondary infection with the tail regrowth.

IME they are a bit susceptible to tail rot… just keep up on ur water changes and normal routine. Its surprising as there kinda advertised as being able to survive in a toilet bowl lol… mine split his tail 3-4 yrs ago and its still split. Has slowly healed back up over the yrs but is taking an extremely long time. Ive yet to use any meds and my system is on auto water change. Def. Odd in my experience with alot of different cat species. Hope urs grows back quicker than mine did.

Thank you. It seems to be growing back slowly but surely. He’ll be fine. Made the dumb mistake of trying to treat the cloudy eye, but forgot completely to take out the carbon.😂 he’s gonna be upgraded as soon as the garage is ready. Anyone know how I can cover the drilled holes for the PVC for the sump? I figure I only need one on each side and then wanna take off both over flows.

Bulkheads with pvc capped off is all u need… can add in a ball valve if u want to use for quickly draining the tank. Personally id leave the overflows in tho and use them. Redundancy is always good so having 2 running is a plus. Ive taken out those same style overflows on glass tanks and regretted it… Don’t really gain much usable space unless u seal up the holes with glass and dont run a sump at all. The sealed overflow boxes are nice also opposed to just a stand pipe. Less worry of the entire tank draining if something fails plumbing wise. Just my opinion tho lol…

Thank you! I’m young so I feel as though I’ll need someone who actually knows how to do such by my side watching over me. The wels is doing okay. I can’t tell if his tail is getting better or worse. I just added two sponge filters from another cold water tank. Added much more filter media to my big HOB. His eyes haven’t shown much improvement. I don’t know why but it seems as though my water is especially good for harboring cloudy eye. Had a barra and paraiba who both suffered from it. Hoping this isn’t one in the Same. Did a 35-40% water change. Started more meds, they are light meds, broad spectrum. He ate some flounder😂 ferociously. I know he’ll pull through just hope it is sooner than later.

I’m pretty frustrated as I’ve tried to get rid of the cloudy eyes on the wels, but to no avail. I’ve tried the General Cure. Maybe I try it again? I’m not sure. I’ve always struggled with fish and cloudy eye. Seems to be untreatable in my water sometimes 😂. Any advice is much welcomed. He still eats like crazy.

Whats ur water testing at? IME id say it may just be high nitrates and medication is probably not needed. General cure contains metro and prazi… those are more so for parasites anyway. Id stop the meds and just keep up on clean water. Also, don’t clean all of ur filters the same time as a water change. U’ll just recycle the tank that way which could cause the cloudy eye. Any progress on getting the 180g up for him?

A cool-water, reasonably-sized, wels-type catfish...sounds like a dream come true for me. I've never seen one of these, or for that matter even seen one listed by our local importer, but I am keeping my eyes peeled...especially for an albino. Yes, I know where one is available privately online :), but it's in the wrong country...or maybe I am. Plus, I really enjoy starting fish out small and raising them up myself.

Good luck with this guy, looking forward to watching your progress in future. :)

One should pop up for ya sooner than later… getting more common now these days across the board. Kinda surprised there not available to ya honestly. 1st US imports were back in 2016-2017. Pretty “manageable” tho. In 6 yrs mine has went from 5” to a mere 21-22”. I will say there not all that exciting tho sadly lol… mine is only out to feed if i walk away, during 1st light and moonrise/moonset in typical pred fashion. If hes out cruisin… i go fishing 😂😂… really is like clock work with the daily moon phases.

I’ll retest water tonight. I agree. It also may be since he is in a smaller tank than I should have him in for right now, then his immune system may be lower, which can make it harder for him to fight it off. I did clean out the power filter the same time as a water change. So thank you, as I know better than that. I love this site because fellow hobbyists can keep each other accountable. As for the 180, I’m debating whether or not to use it for my Bumblebee grouper. I’m going to restructure the stand as the tank is a bit too long in relation to the stand. I’m not sure what to do with the sump either since I’ve never ran one ever. I’ve learned all this from my dad, and obviously humans like to stay in the comfort zone with stuff they are familiar with. So once I get this started, I feel everything else will come together. Hopefully I am right.

Hahah, where are you from mate? Exactly though, nothing beats raising a fish to its true potential under your care.

I second this. Mine just sits and doesn’t really move around a lot. They are extremely interesting though. I wish I could have picked up a soldatov from Wes a couple years back due to the fact they are the closest we could get to a Glanis. Apparently they are similar in size, appetite, and temperament. Very cool fish, just wish they were more available
