That's why I asked, never owning them myself before I wanted info. Now after all the great info I know not to get them for my 55gal.
my post wasn't directed at you mate, sorry if it sounded that way. Was directed at the people ACTUALLY keeping sds in 55 gallon tanks. I understand you were just looking for some advice.

I really do not understand why people attempt to keep any sort of silver dollars in 55 gallon tanks. It's just a bad idea full stop.
I have to disagree with you here.
Spotted silverdollars would do totally fine in a 55 gallon. The reason why most people have skittish silverdollars is because the silver dollars don't feel safe because there is nothing that they can hide or swim by. If you have floating plants in the aquarium, really dim lighting, and non aggressive tankmates, the spotted silverdollars would do fine. Plus they only get 4'' which is a good size.

Yeah, except in THIS case the 55 has an O in it. That, and I agree with the others, a 55 isn't an ideal set up for any species of SD.

I have 4 more months on my apt lease, you see I cant have any tanks over a 55 here. When lease is up I will be upgrading both tanks, my O's and my JD's.

I was thinking of a 125gal 4ftx2ftx2ft for the JD's and a 180 for the O's 6ftx2ftx2ft. Does this sound about right?

Alex, I have t-shirts that are as old as you. lol For another you have probably never seen anyone that has kept spotted SD's that are more than a few yrs old. Fishbase specimen was approx. 7" TL, so clearly the potential for 5" or better is very realistic. You stated that they only get to 4", I disagree. There have been members here on MFK that in the past have stated theirs were 5-51/2".

I couldn't agree more.
After cichlids, metynnis are probably my favourite group of fish and I have kept them many times in many different sized tanks.
For them to act calm you need numbers and space.
I would recommend a 6x2 x2 as an appropriate sized tank for a group, bigger even better.
I have had my lippincotianus for no more than 6 months and they are already around 4 inches.
