Stingrays and high ph levels?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
your keeping up with your geos water changes good :)

rays produce alot more waste

Honestly I do the exact same water change schedule in my Geo tank and my ray tank. It's the sand thats keeping my PH higher then my ray's tank. I use to have gravel in the Geo tank. I've never seen my ray's tank PH come close to my Geo tank even after a massive waterchange.

how long has the sand been in the geos tank?? sand wont buffer your water for very long if any at all so i dont understand what your saying or even asking if you even are?? or just trying to be arguementative

over 6 months. I only had gravel in the geo tank for a week when I 1st set it up then I switched it out to sand. I'm not trying to start an argument. I'm just saying my Geo's tank's PH is alot higher due to the sand compared to my other tank where both tank's water are coming from the same source and the geo tank's PH is not going back under 7 due to the sand.

Your sand is doing nothing after 6 months if it had any buffeting capacity that's long but all gone .

The reason why your geos tank ph stays the same as your tap water and your rays tank doesn't is because the rays produce more waste.the rays waste breaks down and will lower the ph of your tank .

Yes I understand if my monster fish in my bigger tank lowers my ph due to the waste but how is it possible that my Geo tank's PH is well over our city's Tap water PH and we have 0 hardness for buffering capacity? I tell u it's the sand cuz I know it has alot to do with it because I had gravel in my Geo tank from the start and my PH was below 7 in the beginning. After I added the sand it raised my PH and hardness. If you say it should lower and settle back down after a few weeks why hasn't it gone back down under 7 on my Geo tank after 6 months? I have 23 fish in there and they produce quite abit of waste too but it stays higher then my tap's PH with 0 hardness?

This time I'm arguing with u on this one is cuz 1st u said the ph should settle back down after few weeks. Then u answered reason why my geo tank's ph is higher cuz I keep up with my waterchanges. Then u say my rays produce more waste. Another thing my geo's tanks PH is not at Victoria's tap water ph. It's between 7.6-8. That's a lot higher then our tap water 6.8-7.Ur answers keep changing=P

your not testing correctly than

sand will not make just the ph go up and not hardness.after a few days or weeks it would have all been flushed out and lost its little amount of buffering capacity that it had.

1st sand will not buffer a tank for long ,crushed coral or baking soda might for few weeks sand might for a few days if any at all. sand will raise the hardness in your tank at first.you test for gh with a dropper kit so your test is very unaccurate.what measure do you get with that kit? you dont its just a general idea. you determine your water is soft hard or very hard thats it.get a proper test device than you can actually see what i am saying.your ph probably wont go up if your hardness doesnt .so i dont know why you keep going on about this.

2nd the bio load is smaller in your gio tank and your filters are probably full of crap in your rays tank which will lower the ph.do you understand this now??

3rd their is a possibility that the ash and minerals that are added to your guys tap water may naturally buffer up the water after it comes out of the tap. you must be using a low range ph test kit and a high range than?? if your using api drop testers. i think your testing wrong or just trying to be arguementative stir the pot.im just trying to help you understand.i dont want an arguement so please dont take my lack of grammar the wrong way lol

Calgaryflames i'm arguing cuz u say my sand has nothing to do with it and seriously cuz I telling u by experience that my sand has everything to do with my geo tank's water being alkaline where our city's water is slightly acidic. Every time I do a 60 percent waterchange shouldn't my geo tank ph lower since our water is acidic and especially after the tank been set up for 7 months? Also no distilled water will not buffer cuz of minerals added to our city's water cuz i tested ph before on distilled water and it drops after a day. I will prove my point when I place the sand in my 450 and remove the coral as well and show u after 1-2+ months my ray's tank will turn alkaline and still be alkaline.. Also how can I be testing the ph wrong? It's the API ph test kit. All it takes is 3 drops....

I just talked to my friend David who owns Golds aquarium in Calgary why my geo tank's ph is not settling after such a long time is cuz the sand is not stirred up and it will keep buffering cuz once the top layer of sand gets stirred then the sand under it will rebuffer it. Basically he saying the top layer of sand will lose it's buffering capacity but the sand under it won't unless I keep stirring it up consistently then it will eventually lose all it's buffering capacity.
