I’m debating on a final addition to my 29 gallon tank. I currently have 6 neons & 5 Julii Corys. I would like to add 6 harlequin Rasboras or emerald Rasboras, and am debating between a Bolivian ram or a pearl gourami. With the other fish, which of the two would you consider a better fit? Also open to any other suggestions. Thanks! D14A3FE5-9D2B-4F19-868E-278B56892C82.jpeg

That is a beautiful tank! I haven't kept either the pearl gourami (I have kept a blue gourami) or the ram, but from what I've read I'd have to say the gourami. Here's why, most of the fish you have chosen are small schooling fish, and the bolivian ram isn't that much bigger than them. What you'd want is a fish that will make the tank pop, like a larger, feature fish that stands out from the small schooling fish. The Pearl Gourami would do that, while the ram will kind of blend in with the others, and from the videos I've seen of them, they tend to stay near the bottom and don't make an amazing feature fish that wil show off and cruise around the tank. I owned a blue gourami for a few years and she was the star of the tank, always showing off her colors and staying in the open water were everyone could see her.

Another thing, what is your tank resting on, because it doesn't look like an actual aquarium stand? I could be wrong, but if it is not, you might want to consider moving the tank if the table or whatever isn't very sturdy. Remember, that's over 200 lbs of water and equipment, and you wouldn't want it all to come crashing down because the stand wasn't strong enough.

I think that mixing fish from other areas of the world looks out of place. That's just me though. Since you already have south American fish go for some 8-10 blue or regular emperor tetras (great blue color) or 14-18 ember tetras (great red). Any dwarf cichlids would work (with the exception of blue rams). I think a pair of Nannacara Anomala or dwarf flag cichlids would look really cool. But Bolivian rams, apistos and a few others would also work. Good luck!

Edit: I also think that you'd have better luck with the Bolivians. Gouramis can be unpredictable. It might start attaching all the other fish. Juat a word of caution. If you do go for one make suere you get a FEmale.

Pearl Gouramis aren't aggressive at all and are actually quite shy. I think one by itself wouldn't do well. I do think a pair of Bolivian Rams would be far more entertaining if you can definitely get one of each sex. You will get to see genuine cichlid behavior in a much smaller and peaceful package and they will love to sift through that sand. Good luck!

Also, if you want something cool for the top area of the tank Hatchetfish would fit in great.

I’m torn between the two. I keep reading certain things I like about each one, but then personal experience from others ends up steering me in the opposite direction. I’m open to any recommendations of something that would get along with what I’m currently stocking, that isn’t one of those two
