Tank size for redtail catfish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
For a fish like that I'd go at least 4x the expected max length of the fish and at least as wide as his expected adult length front to back.

Figure 4 feet of fish. 4x4 is 16.
So a 16ft long 4 foot front to back aquarium.

Say you make the tank 24 inches high, that's around 1,000g.

Considering he can potentially get longer than that and I like my fish to have a lot of room, I would personally go much bigger, but that's the min. I would even think about.

Others may have a different opinion, I just suggest thinking about adult size and thinking about how long min. you would want your fish to have compared to his body length, and always figure the tank should be at least as long as the fish front to back.

you would make a 16x4x2??? It would be better to have a deeper, wider pond than one that long

You're right, 12x5x2.5 min. would probably be better. I'm not even thinking right this morning :screwy:. Obviously bigger would be a heck of a lot better, neither is much room considering the fish could potentially grow over 5 ft.

If it were me personally I'd do something around 20,000g. More squarish and pretty deep. Not that I would devote a tank souly to one RTC...

im building my pond (5'x10'x32"maybe 12')right now for my rtc. he is outgrowing his 300 gal.they need alot of room if you want a trully healthy fish.ive noticed my rtc sliming alot more lately(maybe stress?)i cant wait to see how he acts when im done with the pond.gl and make sure you want a pet that big for the next 50 yrs or so.

Wow...1000 gallons, huh? I don't know if I'll ever have a tank that big. Well, how big are your tanks, those of you who keep rtcs?

These guys need HUGE tanks, in the 1,000's of gallons. They grow very quickly. If you buy on at 3", he will be over a foot within a year.
Actually it'll be around 18-24" inside of a year... it's not only how big they get ... it's how fast they do it..These are true Monsters and must not be purchased if your not willing to invest into them, not only in the size of their home (tank) but they will actually eat you out of house and home as well ... they have a huge hunger and they are so much fun to feed that it doesn't take long before you've spent a ton in fish food... they do eat better than their owners BTW LOL
