Tank size for redtail catfish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Most RTC's can live live for life in a 500 gallon tank...750 gallon tank or a 1000 gallon. but it depends on the shape...

The problem with listing tanks by how many gallons they are is that when your talking about a big cat the footprint of the tank is far more importiant than how many gallons it is. That's why your getting so many recomendations based on size rather than gallons.

You can almost watch a baby RTC grow. This continues up until the second year and at that point the growth rate drops off a LOT. Still your looking at an average of 18" a year or 36" by the end of year two.

I've said this several times before but it always bears repeting...RTC's don't have tankmates...just meals they are saving for later.

Granted you can get away with fish that are larger than they are in the short term but they outgrow almost everything you put in with them and they have a far greater scarfing capacity than most owners are aware of...

Don't get me wrong here...RTC's are without a doubt the most interactive...intelligant pet fish you can have but you have remember that they are also poster children for the term...MONSTER fish.

aging thread i know, but i feel that red tail cats are just one of those fish that need to stay in the wild.

make me wonder whos bright idea it was to bring a potentially 5 foot fish to north america to sell it for aquariums:screwy:

Because people buy it......if well taken care off rtc's are indeed amazing fish! One day...one day...:headbang2

If you cant handle anything maybe around 500 gallons or more then maybe it can go for a short time lenght of the time to stay in that tank or pond. Most suggest for these huge monster more than 600 gallons...some say they dont need much space since they mostly stay in a spot most of the time durin the day...but hey the thing is that THESE gets HUGE!! lol around 4-5' may not get 5' but its a possiblities from all the other pics and info in a thread saying with proof of large ones in Europe somewhere their in a large aquarium. For me im going somewhere around 3,000 gallons to 6,000 gallons in range...making it all amazonian...with a pima, rtc, rtc x tsn, umbee, pleco and some other odd balls like silver arowana, african arowana, and other many peacock basses...but the way im making my tank is going with info that John gave to me...i had many different dimensions to try out but i may just go with a 26'x18'x8'
