I have been thinking about just finishing off my collection with one big lizard. I am getting fed up with herpetoculture. It seem like everything is about politics and money, rather than just for the love of the animals themselves. I am reducing my collection to just a few favourites of mine... the Sulawesi (or Kra Peninsula) biotope, two boas, tiger salamander and carpet python.

I am not sure what to get though... I am a bigger fan of the varanids, but the tegus look pretty neat as well; although I hate teiids (strictly from a biological standpoint) for reducing scincids to micro-habitats in South America due to having a higher base metabolism.

Dunno.

Yep. Been looking at the roughneck as well, however I rather get varanio's advice for what monitor to get. ;)

It still counts. :D Just that varanio know what monitor matches which owner's personality.

I means, I thought I wanted a Woma Python... but they are too laid back for me; yet I didn't want a carpet python, but he's my FAVOURITE. My handable skinks are my least favourite, yet the ones that you can't even pick up without getting nipped and jumping all over the places are my favourite. Same with the geckos... Crested geckos are nice, but I like the Tokay more.

However at the same time, I don't want my head ripped off by a crocodile monitor (not that it's legal to own one anyway!)

I've come across many tokays which were not the mean nippy things many people think they are.

Mine is wild-caught and meanest Tokay I ever seen. Actually I bought her for that reason since half of the Tokays from the supplier I got her from tend to starve themselves to death. She even try to challenge me to a standoff a few times. Other than that I wholely agree with you.

My fav.. is the Croc monitor they have a bad rep but I know a guy who
bought a captive born one about three+ years ago! It's very tame and he said it was worth the money! Captive one is rare and about double the cost but you can tame them down at that size and the other secret is no live food ever!

My second Fav is a toss up between the Yellow Asian water monitor and the Argus monitor. I had a water monitor about five feet nose to tip of tail and dog tame... I didn't have a cage for him just a large dog carrier with towels and a heat pad under it . I would leave it open all day and he would crawl into it when he want to sleep anytime he wanted. I would wake up put him in the tub so he would go to the bathroom. wash him down and let him walk around the house! to this day I regret selling him!

the argus monitor is very cool monitor. I had a breeding trio! I sold them before I proved them out, then the Guy i sold them too breed them 8 months later! I had a tall long tank made for them they used to stand up (tri-pod with their tails) very cool to see all three of them standing up when they heard me walked in the front door then wait till I fed them...

back to the question Tegu vs Monitor... MONITOR ALL THE WAY!!!!!!!
if it aint a monitor it is a little lizard! :grinno: Go monster!

Hey Kioka, what kind of personality are you looking for in a monitor? Whats the max size youre looking at? Are you looking for a jungle dweller or a drier habitat animal? If we can narrow this down we would be able to make a better recommendation.
