Heh. The bitey and common thing was directed more toward coura just to illustrate that just because it's "unusual," it doesn't means it tickle my fancy. I got my fair share of unusual, but I always return to my basic; although they are much more than say a cornsnake, kingsnake or a spotted python (two of the most popular species of snakes up here at the shows). :p Although I wish I still have my Malagasy Hognosed Snake...

Let see... $8 Gold Skinks (well the pair I got was more than tenfold that price for the pair which I have known for a year previously)... people don't like them because they are too skittish and tend to bite the hand that feed them.... $15 Tokay Gecko... scare the crap out of everyone she met... $50 Coastal Carpet Python, not too bad with handling, although but jumpy. ;) Hence "dog-tame"... if one want a "dog-tame," they might as well just stick with leopard geckos, cornsnakes and ball pythons et cetera. :p

Then there is the boas (about $500 each, heh) and tiger salamander which are calm in themselves.

Ok

Hmm... demension I am thinking...

6'x3'x3'; 7'x3'x3' or 8'x3'x3'

OR

6'x4'x4' or 8'x4'x4'. Thinking the 8'x4' and 4'x4' should be the easiest to build using plywood or MDF.

What would you guys recommend?

i say a red tegu. they have nice colours. they can become very tame. they get large, but not huge (4 ft). and they too are varinids, are they not? i was always under that impression:confused:

I would go with a trio of Monkey Skinks. Build a Tall Terrarium and go for breeding.
These guys are real dinosaurs! I Love Em!!! (don't own any, but if I had room...)

Not really. :p More closely related to ameivas. Tegus = monster of South America; monitors = monster of the Old World.

We have monitors in s florida now :headbang2

I would go for a monitor rather than a tegu although the interactive nature of tegus really does lend themselves to 'home life' - of all the animals that I have sold over the years the one that I miss most (in fact probably only the real one that I regret selling) is a 4.5ft male arg B&W tegu.

For monitors though I was thinking along the same lines a varanio - although I would probably narrow the field to jobiensis, indicus and melinus. For viv size - 8x3x3 or 8x3x4 (high) would be good.

Indeed. Would be interesting to see where they will be in a thousand year...

The more I see naturalistic enclosures for monitors on German websites and varanus.nl; the more I want to do one... However those ones would best be suited for the smaller monitors; although I heard Solomon Islands locality of the V. indicus get to be on the small side.

Here is a nice one for a full-grown Argentine B&W...

Either he never work with it; or he got a Columbian... a lot of petstores sell Columbians as Argentine.
