awesome tank. youll spend your entire life trying to get it back to being that clean after its really started though XD

Tell me about it, my 40 being the second newest gets so effing dirty... I always want it to look at clean as when i first got it... I cleaned the 125g thoroughly this week and it took me about and hour and a half to do that and a WC... my armpits were pretty wet by the end of that.. .:D

What exactly gets dirty? Glass? Substrate?

On the 40?

The glass mostly, and any surface available.. with a slimy brown film, nitrates? I haven't tested in a while.. or I'm just leaving the lights on too long...

You should only have your lights on 4-6hrs a day. I used to have mine on 12+ and switching to 4-6 made it so much better. And some days they dont turn on....like when im out fishing all day :)

Brown algae is actually treated with MORE light, not less.

Brown algae was what I thought it was.. and if I'm leaving the lights on long already why won't it go away??

I have brown algea on 3/4 tank of mine. It doesnt grow very fast but i have to scrape it off at least once a week or when taking pics. The lights on these tanks usually stay on between 14-16 hours a day, usually from 10 am till midnight.

I have tried the chemicals and they seem to do a good job but a week later the algea shows again.

I've noticed tanks with that Tahitian moon sand you're using get it REALLY bad... Could be the sand, as another cause is excess silicates. You can use a product like Seachems Phos-ban to absorb it (goes in your filter) and see how that works.

What are you nitrates and what is your water change schedule?
