They has been a bit more talk about what was used to create Parrots recently and I am curious to see where people stand on this.

Rather than derailing other people's threads with this discussion let this be the place to discuss this matter.

Some common ideas of the parent species are:
A. Midas Cichlid (Amphilophus Citrinellus) and Red Head Cichlid (Vieja Synspilum)
B. Red Devil Cichlid (Amphilophus Labiatus) and Red Head Cichlid (Vieja Synspilum)
C. Midas Cichlid (Amphilophus Citrinellus) and Severum Cichlid (Heroes Severus)
D. Red Devil Cichlid (Amphilophus Labiatus) and Severum Cichlid (Heroes Severus)

I stand by the belief that it was Midas and Synspilum used.

So what do you think?

I think "C". I've had 6 parrots and none have been even slightly aggressive. All males (5) sterile. If they don't have the round shape and the big beak, they aren't parrots... gotta have the traditional parrot look to be parrots, IMO.

Note: I use the term "Parrot" to loosely describe this group of fish.

SEVERUM

Well for starter do no believe that it was the Severum used. Not only is it impossible for Severums to breed with any other fish that is not a Severum, even if you magically crossed it with a Midas or Red Devil, it would look nothing like a Parrot. There are traits on Parrots that do not come from Midas/Red Devil and are not present in Severums.

SYNSPILUM

I believe it is indeed Synspilum that was used. Breeders overseas have been using Synspilum to breed with for many years, it has been used to create Red Monkeys, Rose queen, and certain Flowerhorn strains. Breeding Synspilum or other Vieja (or Paratheraps, what ever you call the genus) throws off certain traits which you can see in all Parrot types.

Both the fan tail and white/green/blue eyes come from Synspilum.

Here is an unfaded juvie Blood Parrot. Any coloration of the parrot will disappear when the Parrot fades/peels to orange, yellow, or red. As you can see, its black spots are grouped near the tail which you see on Synspilum. Midas and Red Devil have several black spots grouped near the center and across of the body.

This is what you could say is the earliest form of of Parrot, its called the Red Mammon.

The Parrot did not come first, the Mammon did. The Parrots are either the result of breeding the Mammon or the by-product of trying to create the Mammon.

Midas and Red Devil

Midas

Red Devil

I also believe it was the Midas and not the Red Devil used to create them. First as I said before the Mammon came first, and as you can see it has a nuchal hump or "kok". True Labiatus Red Devils do not typically grow them but True Citrinellus Midas do grow them. So you would not be using a fish that does not carry a large desired trait. High quality Parrots especially King Kong Parrots will grow nuchal humps. Midas are typically shorter bodied than Red Devils, so again would make sense that it was the Midas and not the Red Devil used.

There you go.

Now this was done by a member on here. He crossed a male Synspilum with a female Red Devil. http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=146990

The parents:

The fry that turned out parrots:

As you can clearly see you get parrots with no severum. Not all the fry would turn out parrot like that but this is one of the type of fry you get from the spawn. You could use other Amphilophus and get similar results. Let this be the final nail in the coffin.

Is that directed at me and the Synspilum people or the Severum people because me and Pikey0151 brought the proof.
