Good to see you back moontanman, I agree if someone has a big enough tank (3,000 gallons if set up properly I think could do it) and can afford to provide the correct enviroment and feed, I say go ahead (unless of course its an endangered species or against the law).

I was offered some fingerlings last year from Russian boarder, but they ship terribly, need pretty cold water. So the answer is no, probably you won't see them. At the same time, there are dedicated people here that would and could house them.

How could "rarefish" say no to a rare fish? :nilly:

never heard of it but it sounds like a col fish that fits in my catagory cuz it rhymns with caiman!!! LOL

Just an FYI is "taiman" pronounced like "tie-man". There is a flyfishing movie making group sponsored by Loop of Sweden called AEG media with an awesome movie about taiman flyfishing in Mongolia called "Fish Bum I: Mongolia". The taiman is the largest salmonid species in the world and has to be just about the coolest fish in the world in my book. Keeping one in captivity would be tough as an enthusiast since they have a huge appetite and have been known to eat things like foot and a half long fish, large aquatic mammals, and ducks. I'd love to see one in person. In the video, the first time they finally hook into one the fisherman thinks he is snagged on an iceberg!

There was an episode with Zeb Hogan on Taimen in Mongolia on National Geographic. I think the shows called Monsterfish. He caught a few....but all still young...never caught a real 6-7 foot monster

Not many trout keepers in general (and I've never seen someone keep salmon), let alone rare Siberian ones. Lol.

Yeah you would need a huge chiller and powerheads to keep them alive and healthy, and that would be quite costly.....still if you had the money it would he real cool too.

I don't agree with the nay-saying except that if they are endangered you'd need a farmed specimen. But I don't see any part of caring for this fish that isn't monster. I mean, most of us dream arapaima dreams, so there's no reason a giant trout should be off the charts. Unlikely? Yes. Very monster if it could be done? Without a doubt!

The huchen, Hucho hucho, is raised for stocking in and near its native range (eastern/central Europe). You may have better luck acquiring it than the taiman. They are very similar and are often considered the same species.
