Thorichthys Aureum??

Now that looks more like aureum . I personaly think it is harder to tell aureum and mixtecos apart at least amongst the fish in my tanks .
There really is alot of variation in maculipinnis tohugh . However The pink rather than red , and the pink running up under the chin , the deeper body and slope of the head , and even the spanling on the face alll look more like aureus too me . Then again though if i were given that pic and asked to ID it i would have to guess either either aureus or mixteco .... it really is a very difficult thing to ID Thorichthys from pictures.... they are all very much alike when it comes to the spangles species like maculipinnis aureus mixteco types
Now helleri , soclofi , pasiones .. those i think are easier to tell ...but even trying to ID meeki from affinis can be troublesome

Could be age too. The aureus I posted a pic of if about a year old, and around 3 1/2 to 4". I have noticed that sthorichthys really start to color up at about this size. And juvies are difficult to tell apart. But even adults are tough. That's why, I don't even try and guess.

I believe these fish are ellioti/macs because of the name posted at the LFS as "Red Aureum." Red aureum isn't a true name for this thorichthys species. I've seen these fish first hand at the local fish store in Denver called About Fish. Great looking fish, but I don't believe they are true aureus because they lack the high levels of pearling in comparison to true Aureus I've seen in pictures.

That is exactly where I got them, About fish inc. I think they are ellioti/macs too but wanted some opinions because I am not the best at IDing fish.

Just to be clear . The OP's picture looked more like maculipinnis to me . My last comments about aureus were to the pics posted by Fish_n_WV .

For som e good examples of Thorichtys try looking in AD 's Central americans book , Don Conkels central americans book and David Burchowitz cichlid guide . Each book has decent pictures ( Ad's having the best pics of aureus ) of Thorichthys . As far as how available the species are I tihnk the order in my area is : meeki ,maculipinnis , gold mixteco ,pasiones ...... I myself ahve all of those species and had no real troubles getting them , but have never seen for sale in LFS any of the following socolofi, affinis, callolepis , gold aureus, blue aureus , green mixteco .. I have had to purchase form other hobbyists or online places like TUIC or Wet Spot to get , helleri , gold aureus , socolofi . I am still looking for callolepis , affinis and green mixtecos ....
That being said I am often skeptical of " aureus" and really prefer to ahve a locale or only purchase them if i can trust the seller or they can trace the source back to a seller/breeder I trust .

So Ichy, what do you think of the pics of my maculipinnis? Not that I am doubting the guy I got them from, but I'm terrible at IDing, and you seem like you are good at it, or at least have some valueble rescources. Also, if you wouldent mind, could you shoot me a pm with the names of those books please. :)

I knew what you were talking about Ichy. Thank you for all the help and I will check out those books. I will keep this thread open and post picture of them as they grow. Feel free to post pictures here too.

Unfortunately I don't have alot of pics of my fish but i do have a few . I don't have pictures of my blue mixteco , pasiones, meeki, and socolofi yet but someday I will .
To clarify the book titles, Guide to Cichlids by David E. Boruchowitz pg 413-415 , Cichlids from Central America by Ad Konings pg 160-163 , Cichlids of north and central america by Don Conkel ( the condensed TFH " yearbook issue") pg 59- 62 .
Also I have several years of seeking out these species and countless hours of reading posts from forums from all over , reading old Buntbarsche Bulletin issues , google searches for Thorichthys pictures , and conversations with fellow hobbyists

Phil honestly unless the actual location the fish was caught can be ID'ed you may , or may not have an aureus. The name red aureum as mentioned before really sends up a red flag to me . I have seen red aureum a few times over the years , and they actually didn't even look like the same species . Aureums range according to Konings book is seperated quite a distance from maculipinis/ellioti . With maculipinnis being much farther north and west and aureum being further south east . I know this probably isn't that much help but I have been there with trying to be certain of the species of Thorichthys i bought , and repeatedly had troubles confirming or denying what the fish i had actualy were. In any case ....they're all beautiful aweseom fish that IMO are highly under appreciated and deserve more attention. I hope to at least get some speard around my neck of the woods as I get spawns , and I hope everyone else out there with these species tries to do the same .

fish _n_vw yes the picture you posted looks like a maculipinnis to me , however I am no expert , but it sure doesnt look like any other species I have ever seen .

Thanks
Tim
