So like the rest of you hard core bichir keepers, I feed tilapia to the little monsters and they love it. I have noticed however a difference in the quality of the tilapia depending on where I get it. Here are some of my purchases and thoughts on the product.
Safeway - Many times on sale (Club card) and I would place it as a mid grade fish product. Not smelly and it is the entire fillet. Ive noticed the bichar dont seem to like some of the reddish meat at the bone line. I like this more than the Walmart stuff. Cant remember price paid but not as cheap as Walmart and not as expensive as Costco.
Walmart - Cheap, cheap cheap. I just bought a 4lb bag for a little over $10. The filllets smell as you are thawing and cutting. A little earthy, fishy smell to it. I consider this a pretty low qualty, thin product taken from smaller sized fish. I really dont like working with it and even the fish kind of turn there noses up at it a bit. Well except for the endli who is an eating machine. If you have heavy eaters this is the way to go for cost for sure.
Costco - A bit more money but a high quality product. This is really a 'Human' grade product. This is just the upper 'loin' section. A nice clean piece of fish, no smell and the fish go crazy over this. I would use this more if the cost were a bit less, I think it was about $15 for about a 2.5lb bag.
So those are a few of the brands Ive used and thoughts on them. What are you guys using and your thoughts on those products? Also if you are using another type of fish let us know.
