Tilapia - Where do you get yours? Quality?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
What i do is cut them in half the put them in a ziplock so i cam defroze them individually.
As much as I like the cool airtight, individually frozen fillets I like the better quality fish more. I have no problems ziplock bagging them up myself. Im going to check out those fillets next time at Costco. Thanks

Frozen Tilapia from the box stores are typically farmed from China or Taiwan. All packaged fillets contain Carbon Monoxide (color retention), bag will state where the fish was farmed (country), and production date (freshness).

As for the fresh version from Costco. Is it farmed in the U.S.? I've seen them before and price is high. So, I never read the label. Was it previously frozen and treated with CO2 (Carbon Monoxide) ? Are the consumers paying for the service of thawing and repacking? Just something to think about that's all.

I've personally used fz tilapia fillets from box stores such as Winco, Cash & Carry, Walmart, Safeway, Fred Meyers. All similar in my opinion in texture and smell. The color retention for me is visually the difference.

Vietnam is another one. But out of all the 3 i think taiwan is the safest. i read an article somewhere about it. i'll try to find it again.

China and Taiwan dominates the frozen tilapia market. Check the back of all the bags you buy. The stigma is that Taiwan typically is higher quality. But box stores will go with the 'Product of China' due to the lower cost.

Jesseliu13- I believe Vietnam is more known for farming large numbers of 'swai' or "basa" catfish. Not saying they don't produce tilapia. But the catfish is a Pangasius Hypophthalmus. Yup, the same kinds you can put in your aquarium. Believe it or not. When you order a catfish from a restaurant. Since it is very cheap to obtain. Lots of places have substituted this for your catfish burgers, blackened catfish, fried catfish, etc... So, I'd recommend asking your server what kind of catfish it is and where it is farmed if you must know. :-)

I buy the Walmart Tilapia, but may try other brands because of the info I gathered today.

Flounder also good choice since it also does not contain Thiaminase
