About my test kit:
I was just thinking.......it is about two years old (looking at receipt) .....hmmm, what is the shelf life of the API Kits? Hmmmm....that could change everything.
Still, the proof is in the pudding, which is ok, the plants are vigorous, the rays are frisky, the water is Gin clear, no smell.....hmmmm.
I still gotta figure out the useful life of the kits.

Good question SpotFin!

You know, I couldn't help but notice that it might be best not to own a kit anymore. From a medical (and practical) standpoint, if you observe the warnings on the bottles you will either receive caustic burns or cancer if the test fluids sontact your skin.

* For those of you about to scream about my above statement: I realize that it is usually long term exposure to said agents, not acute exposure. One testing will not meet or exceed your IDLH limits.*

FireMedic.

It seems time has sped by without an update to this thread:

Everything is going gangbusters still. I added a Marbled Male to the system, the plants are still flourishing, the two females are pregnant (expecting in roughly 40 days) and the water is Gin clear. Everything is a-okay.

Respectfully,
FireMedic.

What is your nitrate level at now? My pothos are growing well, and the nitrate is down to 10-15 ppm. I have 3 small hystrix, a small motoro, the 3 danios, and 7 tetras in the tank now. I think the combo of plants, smaller rays, and less food has resulted in lower nitrates for me. And, I am doing fewer water changes now.

Great news. Glad it is working.
My tests show (best guess) a steady 8-12 ppm. I am nothing but glad.:)

The rays are eating almost constantly, full of color and spunk.

Wow, thank you for a great read Fire. We spend a lot of money trying to replicate nature, so why not let nature do it all for us? It seems to work in the wild, so there is no reason why it shouldnt work in the home too.

A big enough tank, with enough plants/bushes, and who knows what could happen... maybe get a drip feed from gutter/rain water going into the tank... the possabilities are endless!

very inspiring thread. I'll be keeping this in mind for future tanks.
