Tiny discovery that is definately worth sharing.

Thank you for your contributions.

Will try this out with a future tank of mine.

BTW, maybe you should get back to your WCs. About Half a year's worth of data is more than enough to prove it works, so maybe you can go back to giving you fish high quality water?

Thanks for the info firemedic ^^ i will have to definitely try. Two questions:

1. how does one sterilize plants to ensure no germs are transfered into aquarium?
2. does the salt content of the tank water have any effect on plants? say, a table spoon per 5 gallons?

I have tried some water plants from LFS (no idea what they were) but they don't seem to thrive/grow - all end up dead

PS: currently got some other plants from LFS and these seem to grow more roots and new leaves, but the old leaves are starting to get yellow - your idea of using land based plant (no leaves in the water) is great ^^

Cytochik, I would venture to guess that most plants would not be bothered by the amount of salt you are considering. Additionally, disease organisms can be, but are not readily, spread by plants. Nothing a quick, hot, brine dip wouldn't remove anyway. if you trust the source don't worry to much. :)

An overall update:

As of the first week of March I have initiated 50% water changes every other week. I am going to stick to this until I am no longer a ray keeper. Given the fact that everything has worked like a charm thus far, I see no reason to alter my plan. I have allowed Nature to run its course with the plant specimens. The strongest have prevailed, the weak have died.
The rays are vigorous, vibrant and the females are due in <3 weeks.

I will be updating my photos as soon as possible.
Thank you for your questions and comments.
Respectfully,
FireMedic.

In my first attempt at building a pond I placed pothos in the pond for the goldfish to hide in during the cycling. I never was able to read any amonia levels......it was always 0. I think this is something that needs more research!!

As some of you may have noticed seven pups were born this month within this system. All is well. Consider adding plants to your systems.

This is quite interesting.. I read about someone else doing this in another thread and I think it is brilliant and definately saves money, but personally I like the look of clean water myself. With all the plants in there it was hard to see the fish.

Can you swing by MD really quick to help me set up some plants in my systems?
