Trimaculatus Cichlid

does anyone know if these are specifically prone to TB ?
I don’t believe there are any fish in salt or freshwater that’s immune to mycobacteriosis. With that said I’ve never gone looking for a study done on which species who are susceptible other than information regurgitated on aquarium forums. Why do you ask?

Upon rescue of the Trimac yesterday I was doing some research ( he was being sold as a Mayan and to be honest he was all but dead when he come out the tank ) I’ve found a lot of sites and care sheets that talk to Tuberculosis. I’ve not come across care sheets talking to TB with other cichlids.

I’m a little worried about it wiping my tank out if they are prone to it.

We struggle here in the UK to get anything nice from the americas and I’d hate to lose what I have already

Plans for a solo wet pet? Thats what my current plans for mine are. But there is a part of me that wants to try mine in a community tank with other large non-cichlids to see if its as much a jerk as they are reported to be...
Have you picked a vendor you are interested in buying one from? What plans did you have if you were to get one?

That part of you that kinda dreams of a trimac in a "community" setting is a totally natural and very common thought to all of us that keep new world cichlids. However, from my personal experience, the trimac is introduced as a juvenile (of course not a fry) and allowed to grow up (or be raised) within a "peaceful" community of many dither fish and ZERO possible cichlids that could pair up and actively introduce very aggressive behavior into this community. One very important factor that must not be overlooked is this. This community my be kept with at least a 6ft long aquarium, I would use possibly at least a 125 gallon. A trimacs aggressive tendencies could explode if he/she is picked on during its upbringing. Or if once mature, any other cichlid of close relation and everyone knows how new world cichlids are to breed outside their own species, especially Trimacs. My apology for the lengthy response for that wasn't my original thoughts on this reply.

Mine is solo in a 75 but I have other amphilophus I could mix it with but dont even want to attempt it because the trimac has always been a lone fish. Im not sure how it would act. I was fortunate to get mine from a private seller getting out of the hobby so good price and a really nice fish.

Heres my little guy about 8” or so

Beautiful specimen right there if I may say. I've always loved Trimacs and totally miss the pair I had.

I have other amphilophus like my red devil but I would hate to drop a fish into another fishes established territory, even if it is an 8 foot 300 gallon.

Yes! You & I both can agree on what not to do with adult mature established robust American cichlids. Very beautiful specimen right there as well. It seems you understand many established guidelines when keeping new world cichlids. Great job!

My apologies for resurrecting a 2020 thread. I didn't realize I was doing so because it popped up on my "new posts" section and I love American cichlids and naturally without checking dates just replied. And my apologies but indeed those pictures on this thread are of truly beautiful species and takes me way back to my memories of my collection. Thank you for being a great keeper!
