Tropical Gar : The Singapore Order

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
hi all, came here to give some updates on my trop gars.

had 2 of them for a week now.

both exceeding 5" already, with 1 of them nearing 5.5"

definitely grown a lot as they have an obviously wider girth and longer length. estimate growth: 2.5-3cm (1-1.25")

initially built a makeshift nursery for my gars. but decided not to use it.
placed my 2 gars in my 1.5 ft planted tank and emptied 2 packets of feeders into it. on Day 5, my brother helped released the 3rd packet which is living in my main tank, into the 1.5ft nursery. feeders left on day 7 = ~15 estimated. witness 1 gar feeding within 30mins of viewing.

1 gar initially had 50% tail left. the other had 90%. currently the 2 gars are experiencing speedy recovery, having 95% and 100% tail respectively already.

Tail, length and girth growth reported.

---

behavior:

2 gars are graceful at the moment, comfortable with lights. however have difficulty maneuvering among the tangling plants.

coloration:

had pale coloration initially. now having intense spots with cross belly coloration especially when lights are on.

---

QUESTION 1: should i net them out to get a exact measurement?

QUESTION 2: is it normal for the colors to fade when lights are off?

pictures WILL come in once i get my phone charger from my mother's car !

over here, trop gars are pretty unfamiliar territory and most people cant really tell the difference yet. we wanted to tag the fishes as well but after speaking to solomon about it we decided to put it off at least till the fishes are larger.

u mean there are plans for a recall of the trops to be tagged? :D

better take note of the behavior and condition of your trops.

i got news of others with similar bacterial infection. such conditions can spread.

Hi Schmike,

thanks for the alert.

its warming to see that you never gave up on it :)
and i do hope the best outcome for your healing tropical gar!

nice detailed update, thanks for sharing. as for your questions:

1 - i would not take them out for exact measurements at this time. given what we are hearing about bacterial infections, it is best not to stress them out unnecessarily at this point. estimates are ok for hobby purposes, and i would wait until they have at least 2-3 more inches on them before taking them out for measurements just to be safe.

2 - all gars lose their pattern to some extent (some completely, some just a little bit) when the lights go off, so that's perfectly normal.

good luck with the TPGs!--

Guppies suck! They just keep dying. I left the house for the afternoon, come back and 25% of them are dead. Seems like they're getting some sort of tail rot, and I'm afraid this will spread to the gars...
Just wondering what everyone else is feeding they're small gars?

uploading of video failed. :/ lemme try again.

good to hear the great updates!:D

will touch a little on my shock on how much they've grown. it's pretty insane!
