A video summarizing the journey of our 2 GSB so far. From 4500 gal to 240 gal to 25,000 gal to 240 gal again.

They seem to have doubled their weight in the latest 240 gal being properly fed!

Dennis: Glad to see the update and trip down memory lane. This is a learning experience for me to as this is a unique growth situation for sure. Its good to see that they are putting on a good amount of weight. Definitely look forward to seeing an update in a year’s time. I certainly hope they can reach their regular sizes and theres certainly a possibility of it. These are very long lived fish and I know of a specimen that is 20ish years old and roughly 195kg with older people claiming bigger sizes existed in the past.

Viktor: Hi Dennis, I was hoping to hear first and foremost your take on this one. Thank you so much for responding. I have big doubts they would grow properly but you give me a good hope. I still feed them less than they want. Do you think I should give them all they could eat?

Dennis: as for the variant comment, Its possible, ive seen these fish be dark brown to black typically and rare platinum white variants. The underbelly being whiter is true but your fish dont seem to be out of the ordinary. The fish for sure are not catla catla which people often mistake for siamensis.

Dennis: Also I can confirm these fish love to travel in pairs. Regardless of genders I find this behavior unique to these fish though they have a high preference for similar sized fish. I infer this from when I keep them in my pond/aquarium but also when these fish are caught in seine nets theres generally two at a time in the same spot.

Dennis: (on feeding all you can eat) I think its worth a try at least. This fish naturally eats 24/7 so their metabolism is pretty high id say. This fish when obese looks exactly like an obese koi with its shoulders and belly protruding like a balloon almost. That said ive almost never seen obesity in this fish so if you can achieve this it would be informative at least.

Viktor: Great. Can't thank you enough for all your help. Will feed them more then.

These guys seem particularly hard to raise in an aquarium. I purchased 3 to grow out from Rodrigo, but have already lost 2 of them. They just constantly dart in to the sides of the aquarium, essentially they are just killing themselves. I may try buying some larger ones (the ones I bought were only 3") and try them in a softsided pool.

They can be touchy when small and overall they are very timid. I'd not expect them to kill themselves by hitting walls but everyone's tanks can differ and this is a valuable learning.

I am only speculating on cause of death. All the other fish species in the tank are fine, and the deaths were about a month apart. I have no other hypothesis on what else could have caused it.
