Second feeding with big mullet. Wels ignores the dinner bell and ignores the big mullet piece when it is dumped on its head:

The wels takes a big mullet piece but I missed it and hadn't filmed it. Then refuses two times and I have filmed it. Such luck as often...

Yep...a watched pot never boils...:)

It sometimes seems that if I want to observe some particular bit of behaviour, or even just a new fish feeding for the first time...the trick is to sit down comfortably in my easy chair and just watch the tank with unwavering, fixed concentration. Keep that up for a couple hours...stay sharp...don't get distracted by other tanks or telephones or wives or other silliness...just be alert. Have a beer or two while you're at it...I mean, the beer fridge is right there within easy reach...isn't it? :)

The fish in question will eventually come out and feed or do whatever it is you wanted to see him do. It will happen during the few brief moments during which you get up to visit the "little aquarist's room"; you return to your seat with an empty bladder and a heart full of anticipation...only to see that the food item has disappeared, the tank has been re-landscaped, the water is murky, the lid is ajar and the fish is flopping on the floor... :nilly: :wall::WHOA::hitting::OMG::swear:

TBH I don't know and never searched out this info. It seems peers experienced with wels expect at least 8ft in their (human) average keeping time / remaining lifetime (20-40 years?). Wels can live a century or a couple, so any answer to this question would be quite a "soft" number.

Captivity also varies. Fish tank, above ground pond, Public Aquarium - I understand. But is a private 10 acre lake, or a totally unmanaged, wild 100 acre lake a captivity?

idk just a general question lol ik they get 8-12 feet in the wild but usually there’s a big difference in captivity but idk what the exact definition of captivity is

What a magnificent fish, if potentially problematic. Maybe you and future owners will be able to keep it well fed so it doesn't eat its tank mates. On the other hand if they constantly swim up against its mouth like that? I hope it can be cared for and seen by many people.

I like that you include your problems and mistakes in your videos it makes you more human, more humble and the knowledge is shared. But there is no need to sacrifice appendages for the videos!

Do they walk over land? I don't think so. But even if placed in a lake from which it couldn't escape it probably isn't being actively held captive by humans or dependent on them for food. But wild? Its not a wild fish so if in a lake it would be best described as introduced.
