Who thinks infractions are in order??? :) jk

So yeah the rumors are true. This week I purchased and recieved a Wels catfish (Silurus glanis) from Wes a well known vendor on this site. I won't go into price. I saw a few threads about wels catfish here on MFK and I was always under the impression that they were illegal to own in the USA. I have done extensive research and there is not a full ban in effect on the Wels Catfish......YET!!! I did find this bit of alarming link that I seem to have misplaced. TBTB if you still have it could you please post it up? ;) tnx. lol, Very difficult to type with a 2 year old attacking you. :) The Current ban is for fish that have SVC(SPRING VIREMIA OF CARP). Any fish that is a catfish or carp from the countries where it is known to occur must first be tested before importation. The fish that I have apparently comes from the border of China and a Breeder in Russia. They produce the regular variant along with the albino there.

For some information on this species. I found this rather interesting link on the growth rate of S. glanis.

http://invasiber.org/EGarcia/papers/Alp_RFBF_11.pdf

According to this study it takes approx 17 years for a female S. glanis to reach 6 feet in length. It shows that the growth is right at 2 feet in the first two years. so it averages about 1 foot a year the first two years and slows down after that. At age 7 it averages 4 feet in length. It takes til age 12 to reach an average of 5 feet, it takes another 5 years to reach the 6 foot mark. As you can see it grows throughout it's entire life and at this rate wild specimens that are over 8 feet must be 30 years or more in age. Although many factors may play into growth and this is for wild fish. In my estimate I have another year to 2 years to come up with a bigger pond for this fish. Assuming that pond will be 12' x 7' x 3' I will need something larger than the planned pond by the time it is 5-7 years old. Needless to say we cannot expect RTC like growth rates out of this fish. This fish does grow to over 300 lbs in the wild. Historical reports have stated this fish to be over 1000 lbs. I don't see this as likely since this fish would either have massive pituitary issues or have to live for more than 100 years to reach this size. IMO this fish would place 3rd or 4th in the weight category for largest catfish in the world. It is first or second when it comes to length mainly due to it's long eel like tail.

This is the only picture I have been able to take of the catfish thus far. My phone has a crap 2 mp cam, and my laptop is very useless for stills or high quality vids.

Not the best quality but the only one I got before the cam quit on me.

This link is funny because the wels catfish has the same name as me! lol.

Oh I would like to add that I do not condone nor do I advocate the keeping of this species in an outdoor setting in the United States unless it is done properly. Fail safes would need to be ensured to prevent escape during floods, and collapse of pond dams, ect. I have options with this individual. If I cannot provide for it like it needs then i will offer it to someone who can keep it. If a ban goes through and there is no way to get a permit, or house this fish in a public or massive private aquarium I will have no choice but to fire up the BBQ. :) I will never release an aquarium fish into the wild.

This is the opening of the box when it came in the mail.

This is me starting the acclimation of the fish

This is the release of the fish into my 100 gal aquarium where it will spend the first portion of it's stay with me!

This is the battle that ensued between my Flathead and Wels shortly after introduction.

When first introduced the wels sat next to the flathead and seemed fine. After it caught it's breat it then started trying to push the flathead out from underneath the driftwood. The flathead retaliated as it is no pushover. They then went at it as seen in this vid. If you watch closely when the wels seems to be on it's side on top of the flathead, that is the point where it had jammed it's pec fin spine into the muscle on the back of the flathead. minutes after this vid as I was preparing to move the flathead the wels bit his right pec fin breaking the spine. I could hear it snap outside the tank. The flathead stopped battling in that instant and was trying to get away but the wels grabbed the other one and did the same thing. The flathead was lying on it's side gasping when I netted it out. The flathead is in the 400 gal pond and is doing fine for the time being and even eating!!!. He is majorly bruised though.

Behavior thus far.

After the initial battle with the flathead this fish took it easy for a while. Then he started cruising the tank. He tried to chase off the vulture catfish for two days straight, but the vulture cat would just swim to the other side only to get chased back to the other side. The wels tried to bite his pec fins also, but the vulture is way larger and can easily fend him off. This still adds to the fact that vulture catfish don't blindly bite other fish, even when provoked. I have now witnessed the vulture being attacked by, flathead, suncats, and wels. He has never bothered any of them in any way. One of the least aggressive fish I have ever owned when it comes to housing with other aggressive fish. This fish has already learned every inch of the tank, and it is kind of neat the way he will snake around the driftwood like an eel. It has ate some shrimp pellets, and frozen shrimp along with some dried asian whole white shrimp. When I get a better cam I will get some red worms and night crawlers to see how he does with those and get a good vid. :)

Please feel free to add useful information on this species. If someone would like to link the fish eating pigeons that would be ok as well. Let's keep it to good comments and suggestions. I will be cleaning up this thread if it gets silly. We need to show the world that we are responsible keepers and that we will not stand for people who release fish into the wild.

So what are your plans gets huge..pond? I plan on eventually doing an all giant catfish pond in the near future but will only be able to keep species that can handle Illinois winters. Just kinda fishing for ideas/advice right now.
