Wels Catfish (Silurus glanis) Grow out and informational thread!!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Def. Would not have him in a community setting...even if its with a flathead. I had 3 regular wells and ended up with one. I had a 12"er eat a 8"er that were housed together from 3". Totally destroyed him even tho they were similiar size lol.
My ablino wels has been housed alone and begs for food constantly. He will accept floating pellets, feeders, krill and absolutly loves shrimp soaked in vita-chem.

I really wanted the albino but my wallet told me no lol. Maybe in the future if they don't get banned. Ok so does the growth rate of yours match up with what I have posted earlier? I tried to get some pics with my cell while holding a tank light beside the tank lol. We'll see how good they look.

Subbing to this, awesome fish hopefully you'll have it for life. Do you know the sex of it?

I have not attempted to sex it yet. I have not even read up on that portion of it yet. I was so worried with legalities that I didn't bother with it since it is secondary. Not likely to breed them since I only have one lol.

So what are your plans gets huge..pond? I plan on eventually doing an all giant catfish pond in the near future but will only be able to keep species that can handle Illinois winters. Just kinda fishing for ideas/advice right now.

I do not plan on an outdoor pond, but huge, indoor tank or pond yes. I won't reveal my full plans yet as they are down the road a bit, but like I said I hope to have him in a 1200 gal pond within 2 years. This fish can probably withstand your winters as well as mine here in Montana so long as the water is deep enough. They have worse winters than us in Russia. I cannot however condone housing this fish outside without saying that you need a fail safe in case of flooding or failure of your pond. As for others that would probably be fine, Goonch comes to mind. Flathead catfish, and blue catfish would probably get large enough that if you had a steady stock of bait fish in there you wouldn't have to worry about them getting eaten by the wels eventually. I would also provide large structure on the bottom for them as well. Old concrete culverts might work well for instance. One per fish and they should be able to sort the rest lol.
