never really know what their for, i think its a source of food and can be use to grow on drift wood or rocks...idk lmk

It is supposed to absorb your nitrates and out compete the algae for nutrients thus having little to no algae in your aquarium.

I feel there more a decoration.

oh really thanks i think i might get some if it helps out the tank :headbang2

What Torch said, an interesting piece more than anything.

You need to wash them every so often, they also tend to grow slowly.

beautify aquarium, make the fish feel at home and purify the water by removing nitrates

I believe the "moss" is actually a type of algae...

Yup, I believe he meant outcompete other algaes. I would rather have a nice moss ball sitting in my aquarium than lumps of algae growing all over the deco and tank walls.

Its not just for nitrates a lot of plants consume nitrates. If your going to keep them they prefer cooler water and need good lighting or they will wither away.
Like most plants you cannot treat your tank with antibiotics or chemical will kill them. Barbs, Silver Dollars any fish that eats plants will tear them apart. Loaches can tear them apart. In most all planted tanks there not really great cause they don't sit still. They will move tumble around the tank sometimes float up. Best setup for them is an all Moss ball tank without to many obstructions to allow them to move around the tank.

hey thanks i dont run a filter cause i live hawaii so its pretty warm here so water will stay cool, the information is really helpful so thanks, the only question i ask is, is it bad to keep it steady buy tying it down to drift wood or is it better to let them roll

Ow.

How warm it is has nothing to do with the need for a filter. And you shouldn't tie them down. They roll around and collect dirt and organic matter from the tank matter to gain nutrients from. They float because the oxygen they produce collects in the center of the ball and makes them buoyant. They need to release this gas on the surface. If you tie them down the buoyancy will create a sheering force on the ball and can damage it. I know because I had a couple stacked up and the ones on the bottom that weren't able to float to the surface all died but the ones on top thrived.
