I've been thinking about my two koi lately. They’ve been in the aquarium for a while, and honestly, they’re getting pretty big! I’ve been feeling like they need more space to swim and grow, so I’m considering getting a pond for them. I think they’d really enjoy having more room, and it would make me feel better knowing they have a more natural environment. I’m excited about the idea, though, still trying to figure out the best way to set it up.

Did you mean to post a pic of your Koi in the Photo Lounge? If so we would love to see them.

You can post in the Pond setup forum if you are looking for specific advice.

I think, even if I had a tank big enough, I wouldn't keep them in an aquarium because I don't want to go to jail.

Do you mean "Aquarium Jail"? or MFK Jail? or Jail, Jail?
Jail jail. Here in NZ just having them in a tank you're probably unlikely to get jail time probably more like the $5000 fine but you had to transport them soooo...
Ah, here we go:
Legal designation
  • Unwanted Organism
  • Noxious fish
It is an offence to sell, breed or distribute any Unwanted Organism under Sections 52 and 53 of the Biosecurity Act 1993. Moving live koi carp is also an offence. Penalties include a fine of up to $100,000 and/or imprisonment up to 5 years (Section 157 (1)).

People who possess, control, rear, raise, hatch or consign Noxious Fish without authority are liable for a fine of $5,000 under the Freshwater Fisheries Regulations 1983.

I get it as much as anyone, living in Michigan and surrounded by lakes but Jesus Mary that’s some bullshit

As far as Koi in a tank, I have done it and really enjoyed them, a much happier vibe than a predator tank, and also agree they need to be proportional to the tank size.

I have no issue with growing koi on in tanks. I pretty much do that all the time in 180g six foot tanks. Really have to as here in the uk the winter is too cold to keep them growing outdoors and get them from 3-8” to be able to join the main pond of fish over 2ft. It also allows me to check for issues before introducing them to the main group. As for long term in a tank, you would need a big tank but again no real concerns providing tank is big enough and enough filtration. Had some 2ft ones in my indoor 1500g tropical setup with the tropical cats and barbs just like thebiggerthebetter thebiggerthebetter does in his huge outdoor viewing pond. But when does a tank become a pond If it has a viewing window as mine also does???????

They are extremely destructive of any waterways they get into, turn any river or waterway into mud, undermining banks destroying the habitat of endangered natives.
