you are the first that actually read my question and came up with something that made sence. puffers are mean, but i have seen them with tankmates. the yarelli is the only one that i have never seen another tankmate besides another yarelli.
and red devil? midas?
pansies!! my florida gar would snap their f'n backs!! He is not even super aggressive type of fish. just an apex predator with an attitude.

What is it? Not whats the best predator or anything like that. what do you think is the most aggressive fish in the hobby and why.

Dude.... You asked what the most aggressive fish is, and some of us said Fahaka puffers. Try putting a same-size fahaka with your florida gar. Then you'll know what a really aggressive fish.

my black pirahana when fought against my red devil (red devil put into pirahna tank of course) pirahna don't do well with tank changes. pirahna took some fins was beating up red devil then cornered red devil was tired of being cornered and bit so he grabbed pirahna jaw to jaw and shook this happened a few times pirahna began to run and the next day fungus was all over side of pirahna and he died
winner
red devil

I am going to guess and say you have never kept a fahaka. You now how small fry of just about every fish will hide from larger fish in a tank. The fahaka does not. I got my fahaka at 2'' and introduced it into a tank with a 12'' pleco and a green sun fish which are as mean as a jack dempsy. With in 1 yes 1 minute the puffer had bit a chunk out of the pleco and swallowed it. Alot of fish will bite others but it takes a evil one to bite and chew then swallow. Need less to say the next morning the sunny and pleco had bite marks and were hiding. The thing that most people do not understand is that the fahaka doesn't even care to be bit at. I have had him in a tank with breeding convicts and both were killed in less than a day. And they were protecting wigglers and the puffer was eating them. And on top of the pure evilness of the fahaka even if it was to get eaten the fish that ate it would die from the poison in them. It is the second most deadly toxin known to man kind.

yes puffers are aggressive. but do you guys really think they are realy that aggressive to take the title the most aggressive fish in the hobby? I have kept some puffers(not alot of luck gonna try again soon) but i know thier are meaner fish!! Dont get me wrong puffers are some mean little F***s. But thier are more aggressive fish.
what are they???

um what puffers have you kept? cuz if it isn't the fahaka you can't argue based on other puffers. that'd be like saying i keep cichlids (discus, apistos, angels) so that dovii will be no problem w/ my fish.
i've never kept a fahaka so i'll take the word from those that do.

with that said i also toss a vote in for Channa micropeltes

all small species
none of the big guys unfortunatly.
i like the channa....

What's up with all the cichlids? Jags, red devils, etc? Not even close. I'd go with fish like aba aba knifefish, bagarius sp., jardini, african lungfish, bowfin, papyrocranus afer, etc...
All of those fish would tear a jag or rd to pieces in seconds.

When do African Lungfish grow into their temperament? I have one that is a total sweet heart.

only certain lungs do.
and i have heard they are some mean little buggers.
