for the guy who suggested fighter fish :screwy: :screwy: :screwy: :screwy:...dude try putting that fighter into a tank containing any aggresive chichlid or fahaka or something like that and its instant RIP for your fighter....
when i say RIP it means rest in pieces coz thats probably the only thing thats going to be left of him :naughty:

They were joking.

I'd say Alligator Gar (because they have invaded NY's local waters and are destroying literally everything, the government is paying fishermen to kill them when they catch them), Wolf Fish and Snakehead, based on my own experience.

I've never had nor seen a Fahaka Puffer.

Meanest Fish i ever saw was a Clown trigger, anything you put in that fishes tank was dead in minutes, just for looking at him funny... I hated cleaning his tank. had to slide a piece of plexi in to contain him or he'd try and rip you up. He deffinately had a bone to pick with someone.

freshwater. I really can't say. But I'm guessing from what I've heard snake heads have a reputation for aggression. But I have seen pictures of these fish with tankmates. Any fish with very strong territorial instincts could take the spot, link that with teeth, or predetory intillect. and You would likely have half a dozen fish all on the same playing field. Cichlids are territorial, never had dovii. But I have had just about everyother species mentioned. And if they where first in the tank, and I was to lazy to change my scenery around you bet they'de kill anything introduced.

Something that would attack unprovoked, in unfarmilular territory, and with a full belly? not a bloody clue lol

undulated trigger
goonch
noone has said armatus yet? They are by far the most intimidating and predatory

I think it needs to be differentiated between most efficient predator

"I think it needs to be differentiated between most efficient predator"

I agree but we can do better then that. There are a lot of traits which are being lumped together. I might suggest ranking each fish 1-5 in the following categories as a means of determining over all most aggressive'

1. How likely is this fish to attack other fish of similar size?
2. How likely is this fish to attack fish larger then it?
3. How likely is this fish to kill a fish of similar size to it in an attack?
4. How likely is this fish to kill a fish of larger size to it in an attack?
5. How well armed is this fish in general, I.E, does is grow big, does it have sharp teeth, etc. 1= small and no special armaments, 5= Very large, or large and otherwise armed.
6. What is the maximum size animal or other fish would/could this fish attack and kill.
1= small >=5", 2= medium 6" to a foot long, 3= up to two feet long, 4= could drag your girlfriend's cat into the aquarium and eat it if the cat got close enough, 5= could pose lethal danger to its owner in the right circumstances.

Add up all the fish's scores and get a total number.

By the way no catfish are being considered? I've never owned one but I've heard gulper's are monsters.

goonch is a catfish. i still say its the most.

Tell NY to send their Alligator Gar down here to TX where they have been wiped out due to fear-mongering & overfishing.

Most aggressive: Large cichlids with fry (I didnt say they would win..)
Toughest: No idea. I've heard snakehead
Best defense: Fahaka poison/puffing
Best offense: GATF teeth & whatever that vampire-looking Pirahna is...Payara? something like that...

Any fish that can be kept with tankmates should be stricken from this list. This said...

aimara, ARTC, Fahaka, Bagarius...

After consultation with my local lfs who has owned snakeheads, fahaka puffers, gars, and lungfish......along with dozens of different chichlids (I had to consult with him since I have only had goldfish and green sunnies) I was told the meanest fish hes ever had or owned per size or weight was a wolffish! Since he truly is a expert Im gonna take his word on it!
