Quite happy to keep our two eels on their own in their tank, but it does mean that for most of the day there isn't a lot going on in there (apart from noses chilling out in tubes).

What sorts of fish would go well with the fire eels, not hassle them, and that also enjoys a dim, moderately planted tank. We have hard water and thinking of something mid- or top- level that is colourful and active.

People say, anything big enough that they won't eat. Is it really that broad?

I do bichirs with my fire eel, the fire eel will outgrow pretty much all bichirs so as long as you get them about the same size, they should grow at about the same pace. If you are looking for a fish that could display nicely you might get away with some mid size cichlids (depending on agression). Plecos are always a winner, and a royal does look stunning while getting fairly large itself. As long as agression and swollow ability are not present, fire eels pretty much ignore and are ignored by most tank mates. People say fire eels will eat tank mates, but mine only goes for worms and shrimp, though he has never had anything neon tetra sized since I have had him

You might want to pick a severum to go with the fire eel. Clown loaches, roseline sharks, silver dollars, and angelfish are all also good choices.

The fire eels are very docile. Typically, they are know to eat anything that will fit in there mouth, and since they can get to near three feet long, their mouths can get pretty large. They can pretty much be kept with any fish that are larger than this, as long as the fish chosen are not aggressive toward the fire eel.

I am planning on trying to keep discus with my fire eels in my 220 when I finally manage to get it set up.
