I know a private seller who wants to sell regular Jack Dempseys for $5 a piece. Was wondering is that a good deal on them and I have to buy three of them.

That's a very fair price. They are about that price or cheaper at Petco and Petsmart. You would probably only see higher prices for Electric Blues or F1 JDs.

LFS have them around the same price, but they aren't always in the greatest condition. If you find a private dealer with a healthy JD I'd go for it.

In my opinion, a private seller should always sell fish for less than what stores charge because a private seller does not have any overhead. Stores, have to pay their employees, rent, electricity, etc so stores sell for more.

Homebreeders pay for good quality fish, with fry brought up usually in good conditions. The owner has to do the work, feed the fry, and are much healthy and better geneticly than most the stuff you will find in stores. All depends on the breeder though. I got my JD from a local breeder and he is absolutly flawless. Pet stores sell cheap because they have quantity, homebreeders are usually quality so I dont mind paying a bit more.

I see your point but a private seller has the right to ask any amount for his own stock. If it is unreasonable they won't sell and will be forced to either drop their asking price or hold on to their fish. Comparisons between a private sale and chain store prices can't always be equal. Like Fishingout said, LFS can afford to buy cheaper in bulk. Private owners come out of pocket to pay for food, water, any medicines, electricity and all of the other random things that this hobby costs. If you buy fry from a popular wild-caught cichlid, you can't always expect their prices to be cheaper than a chain store's fish of unknown lineage. What it really boils down to is what do you really want, how much are you willing to pay, and from what source will you get it. A $5 fish to you could be well worth $20 to the next guy.

I don't know of any LFS in Indy that would sell a 5" JD for only $5. At that size I could see them going, around here, as high as $15-$20. $5 is a normal price for say 2-3" JD but not a larger specimen. So yeah obviously this is going to vary by location.

For $5.00 grab them if that's what you want.

BUY! BUY! BUY! Again, really good deal. Petsmart usually sells their one inchers for 3.99 or so. These you're looking at are grown out a good bit. Get em!
