I put some new driftwood in my tank the other day and there is this white crap growing on it. Any idea what it is? Wood was boiled 3 times for 1 hour each time and had 2 1 hour cold soaks. Anybody know what it is?IMG_8028.jpeg

When you introduce items into your tank, especially organic matter such as a piece of driftwood, bacteria or fungus will find a place to colonize and grow. The driftwood will release excess carbohydrates and nutrients that the bacterial fungus are feeding on, it's harmless and will go away on it's own.

ty that’s interesting. I’ve put in other driftwood and I’ve never seen that happen before.

That has happened to me twice and of course i came here to MFK and everyone (even google) said it will go away in a few months after almost 1 year i took out the piece the whole piece was covered in that white algae never bothered the fish but it did bother me so now i haven't had wood in my tanks in over 2 years and it kinda sux

Ditto, I have had the same experience with my wc free range non-gmo cage free all natural organic ethically and sustainability harvested fair trade child labor appropriate wood pieces. Plecos and snail will gorge themselves on it. I do agree that it is rather unsightly and have pulled pieces ti wipe them down before returning them to an aquarium.

Can you talk more about this? I'd love ethically sourced wood.
Means, I am a smart a** jocker who collects his own wood locally. Why, cause I am cheap and don’t need to spend hundreds of my own money for exotic wood.

What??? You mean, you don't want to buy wood from Indonesia and Africa, substrate from the Caribbean, stonework from Mexico, plants from South America and Asia and Europe...and then fret about which fish species will constitute a "biotope"???

Doesn't that violate the MFK code?
