I currently have 2 flowerhorns that I beleive both to be males. Not too sure how to sex them though. I mostly want to know if flowerhorns will cross breed with a convict. I have also heard that many flowerhorns do not have the ability to breed at all. Why is this? At what size can FH breed?

I think thast all the q's I have for now.

Thanks

I think they could cross with Convicts but I have not seen it done. They will for a fact breed with anything from the midas complex, Parrot fish if you can get a fertile one. I think they say some are sterile because of the selective cross breeding but for most FH's you get now they can breed. You will just have to get a female something and see how it goes.

You have greatly been mis informed.

Most Male Flowerhorns are fertile as long with the females. Why breed a flowerhorn with a con? What good traits can you get out of this? Plus the flowerhorn will greatly out grow the con and possibly kill it as con stay around the 6 inch range and flowerhorns 12-16 inch range. Flowerhorns can breed at around 4 inch up. And a tip flowerhorns are crazy and will attack things that are not even in the tank.:headbang2

My goals and intentions are to not in fact have the FH and Con breed. Not 100% what good traits could come about, but there may be some. I want to put the FH in a 170gal, but I dont need the Con thinking/or wanting to breed with the FH. I dont need excessive aggression issues due to a spawn.

My FH is currently only 2.5 inches so he should be fine in the setup for awhile without killing anything.

Be careful with putting cons in with a nice fish. If you have a pair of cons and they breed they will fight to the death with anything in the tank.

A flowerhorn will tear a con apart.

I have a 9" male rd with a 4" rt, 4" male zz, and a 2.5" female con. no breeding has been attempted for the past month they have been together. I think the convict is just too scared to deal with the bigger fish but survived because she is small enough to get to places where the bigger fish can't.
