Would my turd contain as much ammonia that is needed to start the nitrogen cycle? I mean we get ammonia from fish turd right? :D

Kidding aside, I got Clear Ammonia from Albertsons for about $1.30 for half a gallon (pretty good deal if you ask me). It took about 10 capfuls to get the concentration to 5ppm. By the way, I have a 60 gallon tank. The diameter of the cap is 1" and the height was 0.5" I would say it was 1.5 - 2 tbsp per capful.

Do I need to add ammonia everyday or should I leave it as it is? Correct me if I'm wrong but I am planning to sit it out and just wait and do the necessary tsting every other day. Also, I don't see the point in doing a water change in a fishless cycling... I am thinking of doing 90% water change after the cycling has finished.

Lend me your thughts...

You are correct, it is pointless to do a water change during a fishless cycle. (That is to keep desireable fish alive in a "oops I didn't know" situation.

Testing EOD is a good plan. You need to keep an eye on it, and don't let the ammonia drop below 1 ppm until the nitrites start converting to nitrates. At first, it will seem like nothing is happening but then as the colony of bacteria builds it will take off.

And lastly, remember to do at least a large water change before adding fish. Don't add anything too expensive or rare before testing the waters with a cheap fish.

Oh, also if you want to crap in your tank, do what ever turns you on. There are plenty of weirdos out there that would love to see the video.

So from what you are saying, test the ammonia levels till it starts to decline and then I test for nitrite. Continue testing for nitrites until level falls and then start testing for nitrates.

Low level of ammonia as bacteria food right?

Damn japanese porno flicks...

quote]

you may need to add more ammonia to keep it at 1ppm once it falls
once nitrites are present they should then fall to zero and nitrate will rise

i would guess this cycle will take 4 weeks....

are you adding live bacteria to the bio filter ??? ( will shorten the cycle time some ) or used filter medi

what temperature is it ???

good luck !!!
