I know that this post has been inactive for a couple of weeks, so forgive me for posting here. I was just reading through it because, although the results are often the same, it's still an interesting subject. Anyway, I'm just reading this last post here about the tough and unbeatable oscar, and watching one of my larger tanks right now laughing. Because of issues in my 75...my two oscars can't get along there, I have had to split them up and stick Homerclese, the 12" nasty oscar in another big tank with my 10" Midas...some of y'all have seen him already, it's "The General". Anyway, while reading about this oscar I am watching homerclese get a bit upset and make faces at The General (through a rather strong egg crate divider), meanwhile, The General is snorting, flaring, flying around the tank, tearing into my drift wood, attacking the pleco and biting the egg crate, shaking it, and the oscar is now hiding behind his chunk of driftwood. PS, it's a temporary situation, Homer will have his own tank again shortly.
Oscars can be bullies, and given the upper hand, will sometimes kill other fairly large fish, but if this divider was pulled right now, the larger oscar would have about 10 minutes to live. Don't worry, it would never happen. I love both of these guys, they're my two favourite pets.
Two fish that don't get enough mention here, in my opinion at least would be Salvini, and Trimac's. For their size, salvini are evil little devils. No, they can't take down an istlanum, or an umbee...but they only get 6", and are mean as you know what, and for their size, have fairly nasty teeth too. Trimac's, yes, they get big, 14" or so, and you could say that one reason they're killers and considered nasty is cause of their size. However, I've got a little TUIC Trimac that is picking off tankmates left, right and center, and he's not yet 3". He's been horribly aggressive since birth! I'd never pit him against an umbee, but ya got to admit, Trimac's are pretty Badazz too
