Why not to use sand

They use gravel... I never heard of sand, I can't imagine how that would work well, it would all settle at the bottom
anaerobic bacteria filters use a low flow through course sand to reduce nitrates in any direction.

Aerobic bacteria filters use sand the same way instead the water is pumped up through the sand.

Is the sand build straight into the filter, or within the filter media?
 
the sand is used as the primary media
 
instead of vacuuming the sand up...if you just mix it all up, lets say every weekend, won't that get out most of the leftover food or what have you, that could cause ammonia build up..??
