Why not to use sand

They use gravel... I never heard of sand, I can't imagine how that would work well, it would all settle at the bottom

anaerobic bacteria filters use a low flow through course sand to reduce nitrates in any direction.

Aerobic bacteria filters use sand the same way instead the water is pumped up through the sand.

Another good thing about sand is that it won't compact in my turtle's anus. Gravel can, since he will eat anything that fits in his mouth.

instead of vacuuming the sand up...if you just mix it all up, lets say every weekend, won't that get out most of the leftover food or what have you, that could cause ammonia build up..??
