About an hour and half from my home in south eastern australia (where temperatures range from a few degrees above freezing to a bit above 40 celcius) there's a power plant. The cooling pond in a massive lake that has water that stays about 25 degrees year round (sorry if not many people use celcius but 25 is pretty much standard tropical aquarium temperature. Over the years people have introduced cichlids into the lake and they've well and truely taken over. These photo were taken the first time I went there. Catching them is a simple as putting a bit of corn on a hook, dropping it in the water and 9 times out of 10, you get another fish. And that is no exaggeration!

I hope to get back there within the next month and try to hunt down some of the bigger red devils! Surely they have to be in there!

Also at a place like this I catch and release with barb-less hooks. Considering the fact that the rest of the water in the state gets about 8 degrees celcius over winter, there's not much of a chance of them spreading!

That's cool kinda and also bad lol
I know there's non native tropical fish and cichlids living in the lake and ponds around my city
But I don't know where at the lake to go to find them
I wanna find a ranger next time and ask where they have had reports of non native fish being caught

At the end of the day they're in a man made dam, only alive because of the temperature of the power station. I don't think they'll do any environmental damage. The water is putrid as well. With temps like that, IF the government were to try and eradicate the cichlids. They'd only be able to stock tropical natives from northern Australia because they'd be able to deal with the temperatures, and at the end of they day, they'd be just as foreign to the area as the cichlids.
