I recently took in an oscar from a coworker, it's a nice looking O, has a lot of the orange flecking in the fins etc that you see in small wild oscars so I'm thinking as it grows (it's just over 2" now) it will look really nice. Anyway this O was in a tank with a BP and getting beaten silly so one of them had to go...and odd man out was the O which was good since I wouldn't have taken a parrot. Anyway he's been in my growout tank for 3 days and already all of his scale/fin damage seems to be healing up well and he's behaving like a normal O (begging for food etc) with none of the sulking you see a lot with new oscars.

Here's the thing...he's got a big chunk bitten out of his hard dorsal fin. It's probably just to the front of where the hard rays change to soft fin rays. Will that grow back? I've never had a fish with hard fin ray damage before, only soft fin and body scarring, and I'm hoping this fin regenerates. Even if it doesn't I guess it's OK, he'll just grow up looking like an old battleaxe with war wounds.

change your water every like 4 days about 35-45% and you should see productive recovery.

Yeah I meant it will heal up some but won't be perfect as if it never happened. The side profile will have an indention. It won't affect the fish at all iykwim.

Well I do lots of w/c anyway, it's my growout and I'm trying to get optimal growth out of the fish in there. I honestly can't tell if there's new growth or not but there is some fin there, the notch where he's bitten doesn't go all the way down to his back. He's more of a rescue so it he doesn't grow all the back it's cool...

it should be fine, he's only 2", i'm sure it will grow back!
maybe a slight indention but not much.

nope. the hard rays won't grow back. the filament between them will, and the ray will continue to grow, but it will always be shorter than the rest of them.

i have a JD with the same deal.

NOPE...wont grow back...my o had the same thing when it was young. and now it's 8 inches.

yeh im thinking the same, my female jag has 2 gaps where its not grown back over the past...6 months or so.

also u got any pics??? btw all oscars look really goodf when small.
