I'm wondering what the shear strength is of a drywall screw? Since my stands are held together with them. Also most lumber is southern yellow pine if it makes any difference.

The manufacturers of screws do not typically publish the shear strength of a standard screw. I have seen it listed at about 350lbs.

Thinking about that I had to go see how I build my stand. I built it like I would frame up a wall so the tank is sitting on the 3.5" side of the board, but the uprights are every 2'.

You should still be OK. If your tank has plastic trim on it, it will be fine as the trim will distribute the weight across the supports.

I figure if that design can hold up the second story on a house then the tank should be ok.

I'm in the process of building a fish room. I had to build floor support and stand for my 500gallon. There's some pic in my gallery. I've learned that a couple more buck on wood is better then cleaning up 500 gallon of water and not to mention the fish and the wife...... oh man i would hear it FOREVER.......
