Spotfin Betta
Betta macrostoma

Size: 3.75”
pH: 6.5-7.5
Tank size: 10G/Individual
Country of origin: Indonesia, particularly Borneo
Diet: Most dry, frozen, and live foods small enough will work
Temperament: Aggressive, though could possibly be kept in a community tank under the right circumstances
Temperature: 75-80° F

Description

A far rarer alternative to the common Betta splendens. These fish are vulnerable in the wild and therefore most commonly found captive-bred. Slightly larger than splendens and some other Betta species. Clear sexual dimorphism, as shown above. (Left: male, right: female) Of the seventy-four known Betta species other than splendens, macrostoma is among the more popular species. Part of the unimaculata complex.

Lol don’t show this to me…you have no idea how much I want them…just so dang expensive. But the closest thing us Americans have to a snakehead.

Opallios Licorice Gourami
Parosphromenus opallios

Size: ~1”
pH: 3.0-6.5
Tank size: 5G/Pair
Country of origin: Indonesia, particularly Borneo
Diet: Live and frozen foods
Temperament: Peaceful, though slightly territorial among own species
Temperature: 70-80° F

Description

Parosphromenus opallios is a very rare licorice gourami that is incredibly difficult to find in the aquarium trade. These sensitive fish require a very low pH and very placid tankmates, if any. Best kept in a blackwater environment. Could possibly be kept with other licorice gourami species.

The reason I posted that at such an absurd time is that I actually just got out of the hospital

Get well soon! So sorry you had to be hospitalised, don't let this thread get in the way of recovery.

Everglades Pygmy Sunfish
Elassoma evergladei

Size: 1.5"
pH: 6.0-8.0
Tank size: 5G/1 small group
Country of origin: United States
Diet: Live and frozen foods
Temperament: Occasionally territorial
Temperature: 50-86° F

Description

Elassoma evergladei is among the smallest sunfish species in the world. These somewhat rare fish, though largely underappreciated, make for very interesting centerpiece fish with unique patterning, especially in males. These fish, like many other sunfish, are native primarily to the Southeastern parts of the United States. They make an interesting "nano" alternative to their much larger and more aggressive relatives.
I go out collecting natives here in SW FL. Occasionally come across these. We collect a bunch of Lucania goodei (Bluefin Killi) & Fundulus chrysotus (Golden Top Minnow). I let my grandson raise them. I used to keep them but too many worries about bringing in nasties from the wild. The grandson doesn't care.

Great thread. When I think back on all the species of Killifish I bred and reared in the 80's & 90's it makes me wish I had stayed in the hobby. The African Cichlid breeding I don't miss LOL. Getting back into the hobby after all these years brings back a lot of memories. Still waiting for my tank to come in. Bred Bettas before too; would love to get my hands on some B. macrostoma.
