DAY 8

Asian Freshwater Tonguefish
Cynoglossus microlepis

Size: 7"
pH: 7.0-8.0
Tank size: 40G/Individual
Country of origin: Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, possibly more
Diet: Live and frozen foods
Temperament: Peaceful, may be bullied by larger fish
Temperature: 75-80° F

Description

Cynoglossus microlepis is a very unique flatfish in the sense that, unlike almost all of the other species, they are truly freshwater. My findings do not show that they even so much as enter brackish or saltwater in the wild. These fish require a fine sand substrate to burrow. Harder substrate such as gravel may also damage their delicate skin. (Yes, I am aware that the one shown in the photo above is most definitely not on fine sand. Pictures were scarce, okay? It was the best one I could find.)

Indian Zebra Blenny
Omobranchus zebra

Size: 3.5"
pH: 7.0-8.5
Tank size: 20G/Individual
Country of origin: Bengal
Diet: Live and frozen foods
Temperament: Occasionally territorial
Temperature: 75-80° F
sg: 1.000-1.015

Description

Omobranchus zebra is one of the few blenny species known to live in freshwater conditions. There are only but a few other blennies known to inhabit freshwater, most of which I will likely cover within the next year. Despite often being found in freshwater, a small amount of salt could still potentially be beneficial. These fish make a very unique centerpiece bottom-dweller. I find that gobies and blennies are often taken for granted as shy bottom-dwellers that hide around all the time. Many, based on my personal observations, are actually rather flamboyant and charismatic.
I thought about buying this a few weeks ago

DAY 9

Three Spot Forest Halfbeak
Hamirhamphodon kuekenthali

Size: 2.5"
pH: 4.0-6.0
Tank size: 10G/1 small group
Country of origin: Indonesia, Sarawak, Borneo
Diet: Live and frozen foods-- Some small, dry foods may also work
Temperament: Peaceful, nervous
Temperature: 75-80° F

Description

Hamirhamphodon kuekenthali is a skiddish surface-dweller best kept in groups. These delicate nano fish requires water that is soft, both in terms of pH and flow. They are more sensitive to water parameters than some other fish. Due to the long beak possessed by these fish, it is imperative to try and prevent these fish from ramming into the walls of the tank and breaking it. Other than that, these fish are relatively easy once you have a nice, established tank with consistent water parameters, and smaller, peaceful tankmates. Not recommended with fish such as puffers, as they are very thin, and could easily be broken in half. These fish are livebearers.
