Marbled Swamp Eel
Synbranchus marmoratus

Size: 40"
pH: 6.0-7.0
Tank size: 200G/Individual
Country of origin: Across South America, Amazon basin
Diet: Live and frozen foods
Temperament: Predatory, though relatively peaceful
Temperature: 75-80° F

Description

Synbranchus marmoratus is not an eel at all, but rather a swamp eel, a family of eel-like fish found mostly throughout Asia and South America. These fish may be occasionally found at international food markets. Extra care must be taken to prevent these fish from escaping from their tanks. You can also buy the rarer spotted version here.

I used to have one of these in a 76 liter when I was 10 and had no clue what I was doing. No wonder it died so fast ?

Edit: it might have been an Asian swamp eel, actually. Nonetheless, that was pretty stupid of me.

Well, I guess so! After all, according to Seriously Fish and Practical Fishkeeping, this 1-meter eel would require a tank 6 meters long and 1.5 meters wide. Assuming a 1-meter height, this works out to a volume of 9000 liters, or 2380.95 gallons. :nilly:

You ignore these rules at your own risk; to do so is to court disaster! :nono:

xenacanth9 xenacanth9 , that link you provided was a shocker. Years ago, these fish were always available, with many LFS having a tank literally squirming with them usually in the 6-10 inch size range. They were so cheap that we actually considered buying a few to try them as fishing bait back in the day.

Seeing them offered at a hundred bucks per is...disturbing...

That all happened before I knew what Practical Fishkeeping and Seriously Fish were, lol. Yeah I agree I'd need a tank that big to keep one properly.

To be fair, the more expensive one is a rarer variant, the one above is the common version

Like a much more intense ember tetra. I love it.
