Amazons would be excellent choices if their teeth didn't grow so darn fast. It might have to do with scraping invertebrates off rocks, according to Seriously Fish.

I might have an easier time with mine if I didn’t have the loaches in there…I got them back when it was an mbuna tank. They are great and I love them, but 2 snail eater species is just a mess.
I do agree that there is a lot in the wild that helps to trim their beaks that cannot be easily done in tanks. Constantly grazing on inverts us got to be a huge one. Unfortunately I can’t get scuds to last long in there.

What kind of loaches are they? I'm surprised you got away with having any species of loach with even the Amazon puffer.
If you can set up an extra tank, you could breed enough trumpet snails in there for everyone in the loach and puffer tank, which could substitute grazeable invertebrates given their hard shells.

Skunk and sun loaches. They have been very peaceful with the puffers (amazons are one of two harmless puffers). I have pond snails, want to get my hands on trumpets.

Skunk and sun makes more sense than, say, weather or clown. They are probably feisty enough to stand up to the puffers.

Good luck on finding some trumpet snails before you have to trim teeth.

All of those species are excellent alternatives to giant pufferfish and Nile pufferfish when considering how those 2 rate as tankbusters.

Actually it’s the puffers I worry about. Amazons have a reputation for being the only puffer without an ounce of aggression in them, and these guys hold up to it. The loaches are definitely the more boisterous of them!
Schoutedeni are good alternatives to amazon puffers. Also abei are kinda like budget schoutedeni although they are a bit more sedentary.
I agree, especially since school aren’t as necessary…but the price!

Maybe you could set up another tank for the loaches or move them into an existing one? Not only would that solve your aggression problem, they wouldn't have to compete for trumpet snails when you get some of those, so it kills 2 birds with 1 stone.
