I got the fishes from a local breeder, here in India. The parents were in a species only tank, but the juveniles were from a large concrete growout tank with various other species, hence my skepticism.
Oh ok

On the first impression they look like saulosi. But some of them are suspicious
orange. Could be Chindongo coral red, a man-made variety from Netherlands that is quite often sold as saulosi. Sometimes also referred to as red coral megalania.

I'm grateful for your quick response Milingu Milingu . So, they are listed as just man made color variants in some websites and hybrids in few others. I suspect the intense orange could also be from the RGB planted light on the tank. I'll post some more photos later with only the white channel.

Also, looks like the sex ratio is pretty lopsided, with significantly more males than females. I'll take a call about adding more juvies, once I transfer the group to the slightly larger tank.

Hey guys, time for an update. I have moved the fish to the 4' shallow tank a few days back and they seem to be doing well. I decided against adding sand for the time being, since few of the fish started holding sand grains and wouldn't eat while in the previous holding tank. I'm planning to scape the tank in a few months once I thin the herd by rehoming the extra males.

The fish are currently being fed Fluval bug bites flakes. NLS cichlid pellet is out of stock here and I will have to choose between NLS Thera+A (0.5-0.75mm) and NLS AlgaeMax (1-1.5mm). Which one would you recommend ?

I have attached some videos of the tank below and sorry about the video quality.

I would add a bunch of rocks for their health and comfort, even if you do formal scaping later. Algaemax.
