Thanks for the reply :)

Very interesting. I always thought the pH wold be very important [especially for those 2 arapaimas] but i guess as long as its stable and not too extreme everybody's happy.

By the way speaking of arpaima, how large are yours [an estimate] ? , and is it true that A.arapima are smaller than A.gigas ?

It could be that Arapaima are normally brought in as babies and those that make it become accustomed to the ph in the wholesalers tanks. They then move to the retailer and again those that make it have become adjusted to the higher ph occurring in most of the USA and Canada (As a opposed to their native Peru/Brasil water).

It is really hard to say the differences in size between the two species since I am not sure there are any Arapaima gigas actually alive today in any public aquarium, fish breeding facility or hobbyists tanks to compare them with to A. arapaima.

However it might possibly explain the claimed enormous sizes of fish from 200 - 300 years ago compared to the max 3 metre size of Arapaima today.

Sorry I forgot my guys.

Friends estimate them to be about 6 feet long.

They really have slowed down in growth which is actually very good. Having them max out at 9 feet would really curtail their activity.

Since they fight a few times a month having them much bigger could cause major problems.

I know you dont like to discuss the money of this project, but its a considerable factor to all us hopefulls. What would you estimate is the operational costs of all your tanks?
Too scary to contemplate........................

wow very nice setup.. i was planning to build a 1 acres pond on my land.. but wont b able to c the fish like ur setup..
That size pond would be great. I have a few ponds also but none that big. I find in ponds that I actually enjoy koi, goldfish and yellow fat head minnows more because in the more turbid waters they are a lot easier to watch and actually that is what I keep in my biggest pond (only 100' by about 50' with a viewing island and gazebo) When I had my black swans I seldom saw any of the fish eating birds hanging around.

In my area I do have a lot of bird predators so I keep my tropicals in smaller ponds in the summers that my dogs can guard for herons etc.

Good luck with your big pond and please keep me posted.

Not for me,

I only let disposable friends do macho things like that.
hahaha disposable.

So they are territorial I presume ? Do they harm each other [eg. tear fins] ?

Not really territorial it just seems one does not like the other.

He damages the mouth in mouth to mouth fighting, scales and fins also.
