Very interesting. I always thought the pH wold be very important [especially for those 2 arapaimas] but i guess as long as its stable and not too extreme everybody's happy.
By the way speaking of arpaima, how large are yours [an estimate] ? , and is it true that A.arapima are smaller than A.gigas ?
It could be that Arapaima are normally brought in as babies and those that make it become accustomed to the ph in the wholesalers tanks. They then move to the retailer and again those that make it have become adjusted to the higher ph occurring in most of the USA and Canada (As a opposed to their native Peru/Brasil water).
It is really hard to say the differences in size between the two species since I am not sure there are any Arapaima gigas actually alive today in any public aquarium, fish breeding facility or hobbyists tanks to compare them with to A. arapaima.
However it might possibly explain the claimed enormous sizes of fish from 200 - 300 years ago compared to the max 3 metre size of Arapaima today.
