I got a small piece of a plant I want to clone. Should I cut the root off so it can grow new roots?

Just snip a couple inches, not the whole thing!

Great thread F1 congrats on the sticky. You have convinced me to try them. I picked up a large pothos called neon pothos they are bright green. Do you have any advice on the easiest way to seperate a large plant. I will be working on it this weekend. Just have to figure out what tank im gonna use this one on.

Thanks very much, appreciate the kind words!

I'm sure its normal golden ivy, yank it out of the pot, take it out side and blast the roots till the dirts gone, also filling up a bucket and shaking the roots in water helps, then just snip 1-2" off the roots and stick where ever you want! I didn't seperate my plant, kept it whole how it was!

Pics when done please

Nah just blasted it with a hose for like 20 minutes. I'm sure there was a little soil left but that doesn't matter.

A lot of roots are growing out of the basket, they seem to be a lot thinner then the roots that were in the dirt, I love the look and cannot wait till they grow more:

The ivy is growing very fast:

Nitrates remain apprx 50% lower!

Happy fish:

Roots seem to grow thinner and the plant itself grow lighter in color then when planted in dirt.don't know why but that is what I have experienced

Interesting, must be abundance of different nutrients in soil compared to water or vice versa.

Either way the roots are an added bonus of decor that I enjoy! The nitrate reduction is the main reason why I find this plant so intriguing!
