Brown is from silicates which it feeds off. You have a source somewhere in the tank or from feeding. It also may be from the wrong spectrum off light.

Well the light I have over the tank is just plain flourescent tubes. Can't remember the spectrum but it's whatever you get at home depot. lol

But my question is if the algae scrubber is doing it's job why would I have any in the tank whatever the color?

Brown feeds off Silicates which the scrubber can not remove. Better to go with T5 bulbs with 10k spectrum.

Dang it! I wish I would have known that before. Now I have to go for a swim to change the bulbs. Lol

Wow, you guys keep digging up this thread.

As an update the tank is holding up perfectly. I've having lots of issues with the filter and algae scrubber. I've since removed the algae scrubber and built a big plant filter using pothos and lucky bamboo. I'll post a pic when I get it installed.
any pics yet? haha

Here's my updated plant filter. The grid will have pothos growing through it and the baskets will have lucky bamboo growing in it. After that are some scrubbies just to keep out the debris from entering the pump chamber. So this replaces my failed attempt at an algae scrubber. It worked for a little while but then it wasn't getting enough flow and started leaking too. So I went back to something simpler with just a plain box and planting baskets. I made it similar to the main tank with leftover material. Epoxy with cloth mat in the corners, Wetsuite on top of that then covered with pool paint.
