Nope. Substrate has nothing to do with it. Just another form of filtration capable of handling the large amounts of food fed everyday. Plus so many more benefits. Mainly for me is its simple and is easier to maintain then my older setup on my 330 gallon.
I've got a 560 that I'm setting up right now, for my rays. So I'm just trying to figure what kind of filters i should use. My first thought was a nice bead filter that could handle 4000 gals. Per hour
I've also got a 150 sump packed w plants. Would a bio reactor benefit me?

Here's a pic of the little piece of the puzzle many overlook with reactors......

All the K1/K3, Stoney creek, the stuff there's a link to here, all fluidized bed media does the same thing, provides a place for bio bacteria.

The "chips" aren't for bacteria, but rather other bio animals.

I knew it would take a while to get the reactor/s right (which it still isn't) so waited to add these, not like I could afford them at the time anyways..... lol

Unfortunately the stuff isn't cheap, and I haven't seen any knockoffs yet.

Supposed to be ran at a 4:1 ratio, but since I already have 5 ft3 in play it will be a 5:1 ratio.

Did you buy more media?? Where is the best place to buy from??
I usually order from Aquatic eco, just cause I'm always needing "new lego pieces" like bulkhead fittings, screen, air diffusers, it's the only place that seems to have just about everything. Since I was getting some other stuff I snagged a bag of chips to finish off what I'll be messing with for the next few months.

Doesn't matter which has more surface area for bacteria. The way we overkill stuff ANY bio material will have more then enough.

What matters is the fact that you can either have these "animals" working FOR you consuming 10X their weight every hour in stuff we don't want in our tanks, OR you can hope they magically appear despite not having a proper enviroment for them.

Isn't the big picture to provide the best homes we can to these fancy flat fish that many of us have thousands invested in? If it wasn't I would have stopped at pot scrubbies a long time ago. But I thought they'd be more "CHIPper" with the good stuff...... :) I know I am. ;)

28.00 per cube foot, unless you order like 25 or more , thats half more more off from K1 and they are very similar and of coures they have a third party saying its better then K1, Joke joke joke, what could be better other then looking at the k1 third party report saying its best or the other guys. But Im no doctor or know it all so they seem close enough the same to me.
Thats not too bad. A $100 in media goes along way w/ this stuff it seems.
But what did the bio chips run you DB?
One of these might be a good summer project for me. Wish i still had that 40g hex i gave away :(
