I think they are worried they will become established and cause harm to native species.And what is the reason cited for the koi ban in Maine (which is a surprise to me too)? Koi herpes virus that had wiped out some trout and salmon stocks once or twice in the last 20 years?

Agreed!It's unfortunate Maine is so strict. There is a much greater concern with the spread of non-native bass and pike here.
